I just got my gas tank dropped Sunday and the contents are alot of crud and rust.(car sat for 6 years) I have been reading many of the forums and am trying to decide if I should take it in to a radiator shop and have it boiled and resealed or just get a new one. Does anyone know where you can get a new tank besides a dealership? Or has anyone had luck with having their tank redone? The prices locally vary and being a woman don't want to be taken for a ride...so to speak... by saying the tank needs to remanufactured...which is where the price gets ugly, and wonder if a new tank would be cheaper. Any advice anyone has would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I just had my gas tank reworked. It was $55 to have it boiled, pressure tested and repainted. It would have cost another $65 to have it re-lined if it failed the pressure test. Even if the tank did need re-lined for another $65, it still would have been less than a new one. Got my radiator re-cored for $55 also at the same time. It took two days to get them back and I was pleasantly surprised at the prices. Check your local shops and get a quote over the phone.

You can buy kits from Eastwood, POR-15 and others if you want to do the cleaning/re-sealing effort yourself. I didn't due to the nature of the components.

Not sure where you could get a new tank, possibly the stealer.

So the best thing would be take it to a radiator shop? Because I called all these other machine shops and they dont hot tank gas tanks only heads and blocks etc.

BD280, You got away CHEEP . My radiator shop wanted $125.00 just to remove and re-solder the top tank and rod the old core. Rockmtnhigh , POR does sell a kit to do the tank . It is a 3 step process of cleaning and preping the metal and then sealing it. escanlon has done a couple of them with the POR . Send him a PM for the details . I don't know that Nissan has tanks for your car . If they do , they will be costly. If you follow the directions given by POR rust should no longer be a problem . All the best . Gary

Thanks for all the advice! I found out today that a new tank would run $550. !! OUCH So I think I am going to look into the POR 15 and tackle this myself. Beandip....I will PM escanlon to find out how it works. Thanks! I need the car running (well more like want it running!).....have to have it emmision tested by the end of the month....grrrrr

I just had my tank boiled out and sealed at a local radiator shop, picked it up today. Lots of rust. They told me to make sure that I replace the fuel filter at least two times to insure that all particulate matter was caught. I paid $135. Tank looks great. Good luck

I just got a quote of $25 to have my gas tank hot tanked and pressure tested. Sounds good to me, so I left it to be done. Maybe living in the boonies isn't always a bad thing.

Just thought I'd give an update......after we had the tank done and we thought all would be well.....the car still ran bad...spitting and sputtering. Cleaned the fuel injectors, those were good, thought maybe the catalytic converter was the problem, it wasn't. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Put a new one in this weekend and the car is like brand new! Never has ran as good as it does now! I know everything we did, needed to be done anyway, but I am so glad that I can drive it outside of town without worrying it is going die. I want to thank everyone for their advice! I know I will need more as time goes on, because eventually will start the body restoring.
