Posted September 12, 200618 yr comment_182023 I finally got my new diff ordered and I should be able to put it in next week. My question is this. Is there anything else under there that I am going to need to replace when I put this one in? Its just a stock replacement for me existing one, but is there anything that will require being replaced during this switch? I ask cuz I would like to get all this done in an afternoon if possible without having to make runs to the auto parts store/order things. I didn't find anything about this on here and the Haynes manual didn't say anything either. September 12, 200618 yr comment_182030 If you have any clunking in rear, the leading culprit is the Diff Mount and now would be the time to replace it too... u joints... bushings... all those typical wear items will be out in the open now. I could only assume if you need to replace the diff. then there could be a few things back there worth looking at replacing.Nate Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21531-installing-the-differential/#findComment-182030 Share on other sites
September 12, 200618 yr comment_182031 There are a number of things that might need to be replaced, but until you look you can't be sure. The differential attaches to the frame with a mount that has rubber parts, like a motor mount. If it is torn you need a new one. Similarly there are mounts for the mustach bar, and if a 77 has anything in common with a 71 you have to remove the lower control arms, which have rubber mounts as well.Sad to say, but unless you look carefully now you could be in for an umpleasant suprise later. September 12, 200618 yr comment_182073 Autozone sells something called a "differential carrier bushing" would that be the diff mount you're talking about or is that something totally different?Nope the diff carrier is inside the diff and holds the spider gears. Not what you want. September 12, 200618 yr comment_182168 Differential front mount, differential strap, moustache bar bushings - I would replace all of them now that the diff is out of the car. I woudl also have the dirveshaft and halfshaft u-joints checked. September 14, 200618 yr Author comment_182454 I got my new one in today and was gonna change the oil in it before I put it in the car. The Haynes manual only talks about the R-180 and says 1 litre. Does anyone know how much to put in the R200? I seem to recall hearing it holds about 1.3, but I don't recall for sure. I wouldn't want to over/underfill.
