Moustache bar bolt differences?

RUSSJZ-ZED

Recommended Posts

Struck a problem installing a R180, I took out the R200 to rebuild and do LSD conversion, installed spare R180, using the original R180 moustache bar.

Problem is it will not go all the way onto the two bolts through the floor, goes on initially but wont go all the way, about 3/4 inch slack at the top.

I found an old post that mentions that the bolts on an R200 are thicker, and that the bushings can be drilled out???

All the parts suppliers seem to list the bushes as the same 240-280Z.

Is there a difference?

Have I manufactured a problem because I'm doing this swap "backwards"? only intended using the 180 short term, so didn't renew bushes, they did not look too bad.

If there is a difference in bush/bolt size, it must mean anyone that replaces 180 bushes is going to have a loose fit if they dont do bolts at the same time.???

(Car is 1976 2 seater 5 speed, temporary diff is from 1977 2+2auto)

I believe you are confusing the bolts that go in the Ring Gear and the bushings that can be used to size a 12mm hole down to 10mm for the older and newer R200's (the article you found) ..... with the bolts/bushings that hold the mustache bar to the body.

It would seem that if you can take the mustache bar out of a 75-78 280Z and bolt it into a 240Z... then the reverse should hold true. Did something in the past bend or push out of place the body bolts?

Remember that the R180 is shorter than the R200.. and the mustache bar has to be reversed in orientation between the two models.

I've never done the swap in the direction your talking about.... so these are just my thoughts, comments...

FWIW,

Phew! I got in before someone else could tell me I,m a turkey, only took 3 hours of knuckle mashing and cussing.

just so no-one else makes the same mistake, the pineapple bushes have a different inside diameter hole ,Top one bigger, bottom one smaller,If you put them on the wrong way , it is obvious(now) the smaller centre hole one will not run all the way up the bolt.

I,ll go away and hide for a bit now.:stupid:

Sort of lucky I could not find my 4 foot long 3/4 drive bar, might have twisted the floor out of it!!!
