There are many Z's out there with the classic 5 slot aluminum wheel out there and I do like them. I have two sets in about equal condition. Both sets are 14x6 if that helps. One set is made by a company called Appliance with what appears to be a push through bullet shaped center cap that is rusty on the inside, but nice on the outside with a big A on the end of the cap. The other set has no center caps and has four small hole drilled and tapped around the center hub for what appears to be a screw on style cap. I know very little about the wheels themselves but they have writing on the back that says; Cal Shelby 500. The slots are a little different between the two sets but I like both. My question is this; Is one set more period correct for the car than the other? Is one a dealer option or are they both aftermarket? Any information or opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Both are aftermarket. "Dealer options" were just whatever aftermarket brand was available to the dealer at the time. Different brands were sold by different dealers. Both are appropriate, the Shelbys perhaps a small bit more so as they are (if I recall correctly) a bit older. It is likely that the Appliance wheels date from the mid-70's.

But either is good, I'd be pleased to have either of those matched sets on my car.

I have the dealer installed Shelby wheels on the '71. I believe the bill of sale all up with bumper overrides, wheels and louvres the car came to $4500 new. Just incase I want to replace my caps where can I get these?

I picked up an old set of four of the 5 slot wheels made by US MAG from Craigslist last weekend for $30. They came with all four of the center caps and with two Dunlop tires mounted with about 3/4 tread left. I thought it was a pretty good find.

I saw those. If I lived closer I'd have tried to beat you to them. LOL

Yeah Arnie, but you already got your craigslist hubcap deal so I think I was due:classic: I used to have a set of these on my first 72 Z I had from 90 to 95 and I think I have a better appreciation for them now then I did then.

When I bought my 1970 240Z at Pomona Valley Datsun in Pomona, Ca., in 1970 it had some dealer installed 5 slots with a press in cap with the letters P/S on them. I later found out that they were marketed by a company in Arcadia, Ca. called Performance Specialties. So, like Arne said, I guess the individual dealer used whatever company they had a deal with.

The first set made by "Appliance" was very popular in the southeast. I bought my set in Orlando in mid 1971. The center caps rust out from the inside. Found similar replacements which fit perfect at Eagle wheels about 2 years ago. Wheels are still on my Z today.
