Hello all, I have alot of reading to do before I start asking for tips.

I am first out, sanding the exterior of my zipper, and want to prime, or etch, or something liker this to keep the rust out. And am looking for some suggestions on bare metal paint prep.

I will got the paint shop next week and ask for suggestions, and try Togo to a car paint shop, and see if they can do the whole deal for me,

Oh, and i got more, but one step at a time.

Hey and welcome to the site! Good luck with your Z.

Have a look here by searching the forums for info on rust/rustproofing/metal prep/paint, etc. Lots of people here use POR-15 for 'rustproofing' chassis metal, and other POR products for prepping the bare metal. It may be useful to you for underside, floor pans, inner fenders, engine bay.

I've learned theres alot involved in both stripping the paint properly, prepping the surfaces, proper cleaning, then a wide variety of prep and paint products to consider for your particular job.

First of all , be aware that primer is porous and if exposed to the weather , the metal surface beneath the primer will rust . So if you sand down to primer and or bare metal , prime and PAINT the area . Even if it is just rattle can paint . This will seal the repair and prevent the rust problem and the area can easily be sanded clean and prepped properly for paint when the finish is to be applied all over the car. Depending on what type of finish paint you are going with , not all primer and or paint , rattle can , is compatible . Gary:knockedou

Wow! Thanks . I got some good reading in today. My wife doesn’t like that I spend so much time on my Z, on the Internet, and in starting the restore. But, she is working, and I am home alone, so... it works out well. I will keep the pics, and updates as I can, and as I get the time to do some work.

When I was young I had a girlfriend that gave the ultimatum "either the car goes or I go"! I said "sorry..cya"!

She stayed and eventually shared my love of the car.

Years and many girlfriends later I met the woman who was to be my wife. Before we got married I made sure that she could stand me keeping the car until the end... She reluctantly agreed.

I can understand the strain a relationship undergoes when a man loves a car almost as much as his wife. (At least that's how the wives perceive it) The truth is that everyone needs an outlet or means of expressing themselves and affirming their abilities and self-worth. The greatest thing the Z and other projects has taught me is this simple but awesome realization...

If man has made it I can make it or fix it if my desire is strong enough. Nothing is out of reach.

Couldn't agree more, my g/f often likes to spend alot of time with me. The downside is it gets me down when I am not fixing the Z up like I have been trying to for the past few years. I'm trying to balance the g/f and car now.

But I couldn't agree more with what you said.

for starters, Gavin very nice cars! Second, the trick or secret is to find a woman who loves you enough to learn about them and help you with them. Or find what she wants and she will be interested in what go's on with it. I am a Ford lover, but my wife has wanted a Z since high school. I bought the Z at a great price and she cant wait to work on it and do more to it. We are learning together as I have never worked on Datsuns before. With this our passion for the car and eachother grows together. Good luck with yours and any advice for working on mine would be appreciated.

My girlfriend is quite tolerant of my obsession really, she can even tell the difference between a 240z and 260z most people can't. She also knows about the 240zg but I think she's confused by the 432 and 432R models.

I took her to our Zcar nationals in 2005 and she took alot of photos of Datsun's and the like. I'd like to get her to be more confident behind the wheel and get her to drive a Z.

I think then she'll understand the obsession more .

That's the trick Gav!

After a woman receives lots of interest/compliments while driving a Z they begin to see things more clearly.

The girlfriend before my wife took mine to get tires and gas as I packed for a long road trip. In two hours time she was approached several times and engaged in many discussions about the car. Chics look hotter in Z's!

Z's like yours are a real trophy and if a woman can't see the value in the car then she needs to have her eyes/head checked.

I am in new York. thanks, and the wife of mine, for now is interested in the car , she likes that this makes me happy. and we like to do things together, and are very focused in simular life goals. good nature to all///

I have actualy gotten my wife to crawl under the Z to help work on it. I jokingly told her I was going to trade it for an old truck, I thought she was going to kill me. I don't think I have ever seen her this into a car.
