Stick-on decal removal

Recommended Posts

I have a 79 620 Pick-up that I will be using as my test / learning painting vehicle before I tackle my 240Z. It has a stick-on decal on both sided of the truck I was wondering if anyone had easy way on how it could be removed.

You can check out the truck at Link

Thanks Owen K

Use a heat gun or a halogen work light (500 W) and a putty knife.

Take the heat gun or lamp and use it to soften the decal. Then use the putty knife (make sure the edge is not real sharp, otherwise you'll take off paint too) and use it to get underneath the decal. Once you have an edge up, then continue using the heat gun and the putty knife to pull it all up.

If you work slowly and diligently, you'll have a good chance of getting it all up in one piece. You won't want to hold the heat gun too close to the surface or for too long either. I used a halogen worklight to strip the paint off my car, so be careful. But for the decal, you won't need that much heat.

With stickers that old and big they tend to come off in chunks. This is dependent on how bad the sun cracking is. I have found that as kmack said heat works good. But if you have A good (new) razor blade you can get under the sticker holding the blade almost flat and rocking it back n forth you will feel when you get under the sticker yet above the paint. This can take more time then A putty knife but you will find it cleaner with less nicks in your paint. Because you will get A feel for where you are (over the paint) that gets lost with A handle with the putty knife.

This is just what I have found to work.

One you use the above tricks to get it off, if you have any glue residue, you might want to go to your local auto paint store and get some 3M adhesive remover in a can. Costs $6 or $7, I think, does the trick--and comes in handy with all sorts of glue removal issues.
