alternator pic needed

Here are a few pictures of an old externally regulated alternator on my '72 (prior to making an upgrade to an internally regulated unit). You'll note that the external regulator has been removed, but the pictures were taken prior to removing the old alternator.

Didn't much more than glance at this before but ....

That 'condenser' or 'noise suppressor' (really a capacitor) should have its pigtail connected to the B+ terminal and its body attached to the E terminal. Installed as in the photos it is at earth potential both sides and won't do diddly squat!

There should NOT be a wire from E to the car body. That should be done at the battery -ve terminal direct to the body AND to the top starter mount bolt.

You are right that the alternator earths through the mount bracket.
