September 21, 200618 yr comment_183225 Here are a few pictures of an old externally regulated alternator on my '72 (prior to making an upgrade to an internally regulated unit). You'll note that the external regulator has been removed, but the pictures were taken prior to removing the old alternator. September 21, 200618 yr Author comment_183232 thx deesz!lachlan also emailed me a pic, and it looks like his car doesn't have an "E" wire eitheri guess they figured the alternator could ground on the engine bracket Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21637-alternator-pic-needed/#findComment-183232 Share on other sites
October 3, 200618 yr comment_184577 Didn't much more than glance at this before but ....That 'condenser' or 'noise suppressor' (really a capacitor) should have its pigtail connected to the B+ terminal and its body attached to the E terminal. Installed as in the photos it is at earth potential both sides and won't do diddly squat! There should NOT be a wire from E to the car body. That should be done at the battery -ve terminal direct to the body AND to the top starter mount bolt. You are right that the alternator earths through the mount bracket.
