Posted September 26, 200618 yr comment_183690 After searching the junkyards and finding no Z's with decent windshields I called the local auto glass company. To my shock I was able to get a brand new windshield for $117.00!! (That's me picking it up and installing myself) This is only $50.00 more than the cheapest junkyard price! Just thought I'd share this for those of you who are faced with needing new glass. September 26, 200618 yr comment_183702 I was so careful removing my wind shield. When moving it into the storage place I just barely tapped it on one corner. That’s all it took she cracked right down the middle long ways. I have been spending every spare moment just getting the body straight I had not even started to look for a replacement. Good to hear a local company had one and it was even priced right. In case anyone’s interested here is a link to the progress we have made. This has been a lot more work then I expected but its been fun!:classic: http://teamracephotos.smugmug.com/gallery/1552171 After searching the junkyards and finding no Z's with decent windshields I called the local auto glass company. September 26, 200618 yr comment_183714 Mark;Had close to the same experience except I just got the seal cut when it snapped in three directions. At least they are not real expensive. Mine was full of rock chips and needed replaced so, to me no loss. September 26, 200618 yr comment_183733 I took my windshield out very carefully, and I cushioned it at the back of the garage, and carefully leaned it against the wall, and cushioned the top where it touched the wall. BUT...when I checked the next day it was cracked right down the middle. The only thing I can think of is I leaned it so the curve was facing out and possibly the 'weight' of the curve the way it was placed cracked it. Its too bad too..the windshield was in great shape. Now I'm going to wait till its ready before I buy the replacement!Zak Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21698-new-winshield-shocked-at-price/#findComment-183733 Share on other sites

September 27, 200618 yr Author comment_183799 You know, the funny thing is that many glass companies could not look up the part and refused to try getting me glass for this car even when I posed the later model '78 280Z. These old cars are not in certain systems anymore. (Online insurance, etc...)Glass supplier at Winter Park/Maitland border.Seek and Seal1200 Solana AveWinter Park, FL 32789407-644-0027The glass was PPG brand and came with a blue tinted band across the top. It was the only one in stock at the time. I'm sure that with proper arrangements you could get a clear windshield. They also offered a cheaper aftermarket windshield for our cars but I like factory spec parts better.JimI installed a windshield in the Z roughly 17 years ago. It's not so bad as long as the person pressing outside is careful. October 1, 200618 yr comment_184277 While we're talking about windshields, does anyone know what years 240z cars came with clear windshields, and which years they came with the tint?I found a NOS windshield for big $$$$ with the tint and would like to know if it originally came on my late series 1 car. The quarter windows seem to have a very light greenish tint but it is really difficult to tell. thanks for any info.Dan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/21698-new-winshield-shocked-at-price/#findComment-184277 Share on other sites
October 1, 200618 yr Author comment_184294 I thought all 240-280Z's came from the factory with clear. I'm sure someone on the board knows the answer. Where did you find the NOS windshield? Dealer?? October 1, 200618 yr comment_184299 I had a new windshield installed in my 240 , it has the darker tint along the roof line , good improvement but not original , they used my gasket $175.00 . I got one price for a Nissan part but it was a few days wait and the price was $375.00 Needless to say , since I don't care about OEM , I went with the $175.00 I have a good wind shield in my attic but the difference in price between them installing my glass and the new one wasn't that much and they wouldn't guarantee my glass and they did theirs . If you MUST have a Nissan marking on the glass , if you can find a new part that is one thing, other wise the difference between a bone yard glass and a new one is only about $40.00.
