distributor fluid

I have a 79 280zx need to know what fluid is in the bottom of the shaft?

And how much...just infomation if anyone can help me thanks.

You'll need about 5 quarts of standard motor oil. However, instead of adding it through the distributor you'll find that it is much easier to add through the hole in the top of the valve cover.

I put 5 but there is no oil getting there?

It will get there. The bottom of the distributor shaft sits in the top of the oil pump. When the engine runs that shaft will get lubrication.

Sorry, I was just teasing you. On the L-series engine the distributor shaft is driven by a gear at the front of the crankshaft - behind the front engine cover. This same shaft also drives the oil pump. Any fluid you're seeing is just engine oil. If the car has not been cranked for a while the oil will simply run down into the pan so you might not see much on the shaft.

Any time you refill the dizzy fluid you are also supposed to check the blinker fluid. It also helps to remove any loose nuts behind the wheel at this time.

Here is a list of Oil/Lubricants you need to worry about, Yes they are in order of importance.

1. Motor Oil 10Wx30/10Wx40

2. Transmission Oil (ATF for auto Transmission or 80x90W for manual Transmission)

3. Brake Fluid

4. Anti-Freeze

5. Differential Oil (80x90W Same as Manual Transmission)

6. Wiper fluid (5wx10)

7. Blinker Lub (5wx10)

8. Window Grease (to keep the glare off)

9. Heater Motor Lub (5wx10)

10. Gauge Liquid (can get at any parts store)

280~master, You seem to have forgotten that ZX's have a rear window washer as well. Therefore let me add to your otherwise mostly complete list:

6a. Rear window fluid (10w-30, lighter viscosity needed due to aerodynamic and gravitational forces, UNLESS you are using the rear wiper while IN REVERSE! Doing this is not only unwise, but it requires the addition of a pump reverse flow containment meter {reverses/exchanges fluid from front tank to rear tank; part #122-wd-40, NLA},automatic 3-way deflection reversal device {this aims the liquid where it needs to go, regardless of lateral velosity or lunar phase, assuming your car is on at least 5 wheels; part #JENY-867-5309, NLA})

BOOGIEMAN-welcome to the forum, I've got a '79 ZX as well. Regarding the fluids listed, most of them are special order-the link to Kale automotive usually has some around back.

Almost forgot two others:

Anti freeze is for summer, since stuff doesn't freeze,

so for the winter months, you'll need freeze fluid (for the freeze plugs)

you'll also need to hunt down some radiator washing fluid.
