I knew my car didn't have any significant rust and the rocker panels looked great outside, but this morning I had the interior vinyl off that area for the first time to run some wires. This gave me my first look at the inside of the rocker panels. I had thought there would probably be the beginnings of rust and figured I'd be poking my fingers in those holes with a brushful of Por 15.

What a delightful sight I saw.

I have attached one photo; excuse me if I seem to gloat.

This is a California car, '73, spent its whole life in dry Pleasanton/Livermore till making the trip to my garage last December.

If you still want to paint with POR, don't waste time and effort with a brush, use an air blower with a venturi at the tip and a hose into the POR can. It's called a Spray Nozzle and it will speed up your POR painting by a factor of at least 100.

Enrique -- Thanks. You're saying there's a product called "Spray Nozzle"? A standalone thing, or do you mean a compressor accessory? If standalone, who makes?

My rocker panels look like that too now but, I have just a few hours getting them there. I am on the band wagon of do spray the inside of them with POR as soon as you get a chance.

The Spray Nozzle I'm referring to is a simple Air Blower that attaches to the end of your hose from your air compressor with a subtle difference...it's had a tube inserted at the end of the nozzle and a pvc tube attached to it. The end of the pvc tube is put into the paint / liquid you want (a fishing weight works real well) to keep it submerged. Then releasing the air that allows the air rushing by it to suck liquid out (venturi principle) and then blast / atomize it thereby spraying it onto the surface you aim this at.

Harbor Freight sells a very inexpensive air blower already prepped for this, P/N 37346 SYPHON SPRAY BLOW GUN it even includes the pvc hose, all you need to do is put a connector on it.

Very nice Steve. I hope to find the same thing in mine when I get in there. My car spent it's entire life very near yours in San Francisco, and then in Santa Rosa, and it's now here with me in Santa Cruz. The first owner said it was always garaged and it doesn't appear that the salt air from the SF Bay got to it very often.

Unfortunately for the car, I now live 2 blocks from the ocean, and don't have a garage at the moment. Hopefully the $250 car cover and the carport will afford some level of protection from the elements. I also plan on staying away from the beach during high surf days to avoid the salt spray in the air. You can see what kind of damage the salt air can do just by looking at some the older cars that the surfers have around here. Talk about serious body cancer..

Just a word of caution here. POR 15 is EXTREMELY TOXIC!!!! You should only spray it if you are using a proper respirator. A simple paper face mask just won't do.

YIKES!! Marty is totally correct on this one.

I'll take my lumps for not having re-terated that just being in an open air environment with lots of air circulating is NOT enough. You simply MUST use an organic paint filter mask...it may cost $25 or so, but it will definitely be MUCH cheaper than the headaches, dizziness, and vertigo you can get from only using a dust mask (voice of experience here, which makes my omission even more embarrasing).

Any need to worry about moisture in the air from the compressor or not?

Anytime you paint with compressed air you should use an air water seperator or filter. Yes, water is a factor in the curing process of POR.
