mmagnus,

Outstanding job you've done on the 1970!!!!!!!! I'd have to say your Z is easily worth $20k on the open market. Someone, provided they realize whats being offered and has the green, is going to get a super cherry 1970 240Z. Knowing what I know and having gone through the process myself, I'd give you $20K today.....that is if I was looking to buy. You know....you may want to reconsider selling your Z! Shoot, just put it in long term storage for about 10 years, and by that time it will certainly have appreciated and you may just find that you were glad you didn't sell it to begin with. Again....one sweet 240Z!!!

Thanks guys. I love the car, but my interests have gone in a different direction. I am turning 40 this month, and i think mid-life crises is settling in.

I want something i can drop the top on and go fast!!!!:D

I am thinking of getting a late model 911 or if i can swing it, a mid 90's Ferrari.

I have been into Z cars since 1990 and think they are iconic in the automotive history. Quite honestly, I spent WAY too much money on this project and never really got to a point of enjoyment.

On another note, i got this real ugly blast email from some z purist that was completely pissed about what i have done with the car. He feels that because the car is "modified", i cant call it "restored"

What's your opinion on that..?

Tough $xxx to him. It's your car. These cars were built to drive and to enjoy. Very few were ever left totally stock when they were new, it's the kind of car that owners like to play with. If he wants to keep his all stock, fine. But chastising you for wanting to go a different direction with yours, that's plain rude. If he doesn't like it, tell him to buy it from you and then he car "restore" it to his standards, not yours.

He is right! You did modify it, but that isn't a bad thing. Restoration is by definition putting it back the way it was-with no modification. A truely restored early car is almost always worth more than a modified one. But this is your car, and untill it is to be sold, your value is the only one that matters.

sending ugly blast emails

getting pissed about a car enthusiast's preferences

telling a grown man who has invested 45k into a car he loves that a 35 year old car in your car's condition is not worthy of the restored badge.

these actions disqualify this person from my definition of z purist. the only thing right from him that you have indicated is that a modified car is not a bone stock car. i'm sure you would not snooker some unsuspecting buyer into thinking this car is as it was when delivered. so advertise it to the masses as a restored car and when you have a serious buyer "who does not already know" tell them of the changes.

but for your sake don't sell the car only because some jackass is getting far too excited about your personal property and how you choose to advertise it's sale. this guy only has as much influence on you as you let him have. you know your car and the market and what you want from all things considered so do what you want and tell said z pruist i would gladly meet him for lunch at a nice restaurant of his choice in tampa to discuss how much we enjoy owning and driving our cars.

Mark,

Just thought I'd weigh in with an opinion (you know what that's worth!). You've got an awful lot of money in a very fine car. Unless you've absolutely got to have the $15K to buy your "go fast", I'd find a way to keep the Z. You may find you lose interest in the "go fast" real quick. My Z sits next to a Viper GTS and if one had to go it would be the GTS. Why?

1. The Z is just plain more fun to drive.

2. Not everybodys wants to race you.

3. I get a lot more thumbs up and smiles from other drivers when I'm in the Z. Really, I'm not kidding.

4. I'm very lucky and can have both, so it's nice to be able to go fast sometimes, but overall I reach for the Z keys a lot more often.

5. If it breaks, it's a cheap and easy fix. A new motor for the GTS if I could still get one is around $20K.

As to the Ferrai, I've had the same dream for a long time too. But unless you've just got too much money, I'd rethink that one. I've had lots of freinds that have gone through the same mid life crisis and they say it's kind of like a boat. The happiest day is the day you buy it and sell it. Ferraiis break all the time and it's going to cost you the price of a z to repair it. I love the look, but just don't have the time in my life for the hassle of trying to keep one running.

So, there is my totally unsolicited advice. BTW, I'm over 50, so don't let the turning 40 thing get to you. The only difference between 40 and 50 is the number of toys you have!!!

Best of luck,

Bob

Bobc, I agree about keeping the ownership option open if possible, but I fully understand the concept of not being able to do so. There is also sometimes that certain 'something' about completing a project and moving on.... the answer to the question "What's next?" is different for each one of us to some degree or another.

For my mid-life crisis I bought a Z, but to each his / her own.

As for the "purist" who had comments, he may know his Zs, but doesn't know when to reserve comment. The latter is much more important in the grand scheme of things in life.

I hope the Z finds a good home. (Wish it was my home, but that can't be so.)
