Mark,

.....snipped.......

So, there is my totally unsolicited advice. BTW, I'm over 50, so don't let the turning 40 thing get to you. The only difference between 40 and 50 is the number of toys you have!!!

Best of luck,

Bob

Hi Bob/ mmagnus:

My unsolicited comments:

Bob:

1. The difference between 50 and 60 is the fact that some of your most beloved toys don't work like they used to..<vbg>.

mmagnus:

2. I like the process of rebuilding, refreshing and/or restoring 240-Z's. I can understand why one would sell a car once it's completed... It's time to get something else to work on.

3. In the picture below.. of the V12 Jag, the V12 Ferrari and the 240-Z - which one stayed while the others were sold...?

I had my Ferrari and I hope you get to have yours... but I'd respectfully suggest that you hang on to your Z for at least a year after your 911 or Ferrari.... then decide which to keep.

From personal experience, I know that I can rationalize almost anything I want - I'd suggest that you finance the 911 or Ferrari fully, for at least the first year, so you can keep your Z. Then at the end of that year - decide which to resell. You'll have 12 payments at a higher rate... and if you decide to sell the Z it will be worth more next year anyway - and you can pay down the loan on the 911/Ferrari at that point if you decide to keep the new car... I'm betting you'll keep the Z at the end of that first year.

MMagnus,

I don't quite have my finger on the pulse of all Zcar sales in the country, but your car is currently garnering a higher bid than many other stock "restored" cars I've seen go through EBay, so tell the Z "purist" to effoff unless he plans to pony up some cash. Sheesh, these cars are a lot fun but to get out of shape over a restoration on a "low-value" collector car like our Beloved Z is a bit over the top...Looks like you'll make some good money on the car, and I hope your midlife crisis is a fun one!

Here's thought: Keep it in the family and buy a 2008 Skyline!

Unsolicited advice in re: F cars. Avoid 348s. Loads of expensive maintenance and reliability issues, even for FCars. 328s are probably the sweet spot (price/performance) as timing belt changes don't require engine removal (unlike 308s) and they are a bit more reliable. If you go 308, get an early GTS (pre-1980, preferably fiberglas) or a later GTSi QV. If you can swing it, the 355 or 512 is a great way to drop some cash. In my research, it appears that doing undocumented work (i.e., not professionally performed maintenance) will most likely damage resale. Buyers are sticklers for paper trails, books/manuals, tool kits, blah blah blah. YMMV, of course.

Best of luck,

Steve

Thanks again guys. Lots of good feedback. I hate to lose the Z, but i have a four car garage and they are all full. So, need to make space. I know i am not going to get any support on selling the z on this site, thats understandable. About two years ago i bought a 350Z roadster and sold it a year later. I have bought boats and jet skis and sold them before the end of the season. I had a brand new Harley for 11 months. All along the way, i kept the 240z.

Turning 40 for me is going to be a milestone. I still feel like a kid at heart.

Even though i have two kids and an SUV. As a boy, i had always admired Ferraris, Lambos, Maseratis, Porsche, etc. My daily driver is a 2006 BMW 750LI.

Thanks for the years of support on this site. It has been an invaluable resource and is some cases friendships i have made along the way.

Perhaps the Term is restomod? whatever. There are a short list of Z purists and I am sure that Carl Beck knows all of them. Don't worry about some smuck that is looking for an arguement.

I must say you are facing a difficult decision. I personally would not suggest the 911, but it is your choice...now a Lotus Elise...hmm tough choice.

I think the guy that keeps sending me these emails is the same guy that was selling his 240z with 14k miles a few months ago on ebay. If i remember correctly, he was a real jerk because he canceled the auction 3 times.

Real uptight idiot. He is even more pissed that the car was originally blue on blue and he is restoring a "rare" blue on blue. What he didnt see was that the car was white on black when i got it.

Here are some of his quotes:

"You took a very rare Blue on Blue series one car and in effect ruined it. The engine for the colector and purist is worthless. The car is no longer numbers matching and has lost all it's true value. Plus there are things on the outside and inside of the specimen that are missing. This is not a restored car but a modified car. Please stop misrepresenting this classic car as restored. It is noow meaningless to the history of the 240z. One more series one car ruined for all time."

".... just sold the lowest mileage series one vehicle in the world. With 14,ooo showroom original rust free miles"

"...you are a charlatan with a worthless specimen and really ridiculous engine in it with a car that was repainted and it doesn't even have a horn pad hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha"

This guy went out of his way to send me countless emails, just to give his rediculous opinion!

He can not be much of a purist or he would still have and protect this car.

Block sender and move on. I do own a numbers matching 70 but, define stock!! Coming out of the dealership it has never had steel wheels or hub caps does that make it not original I just replaced the rocker panels with none stock replacements parts? Its got NGK spark plugs where do you stop.

Really like the look of your car have been following it for a while. Would I of done to that what you have? probably not, but it is not mine and I still think It is a sharp 70. Besides if he was a true Z purist what month did they even build a blue on blue?

A lot of cars have come and gone here too, still have the Z but, hey do what you want and enjoy. You built one you could always do it again if you decided the Z was the right play toy.

yep,

that is burt diamond.

i can smell his words.

the sick thing is that he would be proud to have us say what a jerk he is.

i find his neurotic behaivior very funny but he has hurt many people with his words and unless you can brush off his comments it's best to stop all contact and let him move on to his next victim.

Thanks guys. I guess this guy just go under my skin. On the flip side, i got a ton of people just emailing me on how great the car looks.

Most of the people who have seen the photos would love to have that car. Nice job indeed, and I'm glad to see that the auction is going well so far.

Don't let this nimrod get under your skin. We've all seen examples of his assinine attitude - it must be exactly the way it rolled out of the showroom, etc etc etc - the guy should just get over it. It's a Japanese sports car! We love them, but give me a break. It's not a rare Hemi Cuda.

Delete his emails unread, or forward them to eBay (since harrassment of one user by another is against eBay rules).

Again, nice job on the Z.

Hi Mark:

I hate to tell you, but you'll be saying the same thing at 50 and 60....

Mentally, you don't grow old, you mature and retain the solid values your life's experiences have forged. For the most part you'll still lust after the same things you did when you were 35 or 40.... The sad part is that many of those "things" won't go out with men that look like their Grandfather (unless a great deal of money changes hands:-).

If you had told me when I was 45 - that I'd be re-married and having kids again at 50 - I'd have told you that you were nuts!!... Thank God we don't get what we ask for... Now in addition to a son 36, a second son 33, I have a daughter 12 years old and the most wonderful wife any man could ask for.

You will find that the time between 40 and 50 years of age - shoots by before you know it. That however is nothing compared to the time flying by at hyper-speed, between 50 and 60 years of age.

Ah to be a kid at 40 again.... and know what I know now....

BTW - cdavid is right - it sounds like Burt - cdavid's advice is solid... ignore Burt. If anything, pity him, he must have a very sad existence. Also, just FYI - his car with 14K miles was a Series II example not a Series I.

kind regards,

Carl B.
