Couple quick questions. I've done searches for both, but came up short of an answer to my questions after much reading.

1.) My old 240Z has only two studs for the mechanical fuel pump on the E88 gead. My three spare heads all only have two studs (even though all are threaded for three studs). My rebuilt P90 has the hole for the mech. pump, but of course no studs due to it being for the fuel injected application in its previous 280ZX configuration. I read in my 1970 FSM under fuel pump removal to "unscrew the three mounting bolts...." I have extra studs I can take off the other heads so my guess is I need to add another to the P90.

2.) This may sound silly, but is there a special tool for removing the tranny drain plug? My late 5 speed has a square indent that looks like something must fit in there. I've never had a plug like this before to deal with and don't have the tool I guess. Of course I lost most of the oil when I seperated the tranny and driveline anyway. More oil for my poor wooden garage floors -- I guess it makes them more water resistant, if not smellier.

Thanks for the quick response and info BD280Z, I considered that the lower one might be an actual bolt, not a stud with a nut.

My red car is nearly original, and it appears to have a stud in the bottom hole.

no pic, but my 72 has 2 studs on the upper, and a bolt, (that I stripped) on the lower. I am debating tomaybe add a third stud to fix the stripped lower one.

A 1/2" drive ratchet or breaker bar should do the trick on your drain plug.

I don't think you can install a stud in the third hole because of the way the pump rotates/rolls into place when installing it. It won't clear the stud/the stud in the lower hole will get in the way of getting the pump flush with the head. I believe this is why the original setup had a bolt in the lower hole.

You might get away with it if you first install the pump on the two upper studs and then install the third stud and nut. Hope this makes sense!

My stock L 24 has three studs on it. I would lean that way as this fuel pump has not been removed before and then Arne's Low milage car matches it. The only thing missing on my stock set up is the smog pump and the two hoses going to it.

Will get into the parts CD tomorrow and up date you if there is a change.

Three studs is correct according to the microfiche. You can install the pump over the three studs. I would imagine that switching to a bolt at the bottom is something that would have been done to make installation easier. Doubtful that any of these cars a fuel pump that was originally installed and has been left untouched for all of these years.

Per Microfiche page 13-3 number 26 and the middle inset on that page up to 4/70 had a bolt in the bottom (no part number listed) every thing from 5/70 on calls out three studs. 08223-84210. Am I reading that right? My car a 6/70 has all studs per the Microfiche.

Hi Stephen. My car has 24,000 original miles on it. When I pulled the fuel pump last month the bottom bolt was plated with the zinc chromate finish. The pump had never been replaced according to my Father-in-Law who purchased the car new.
