Mechanical Fuel Pump Studs #, Tranny Drain Plug

Stephen, I need to check my microfiche before I respond to some of these posts, thanks. However, I just took a look at mine and there seems to be different setups depending on what month/year your car was made. There are small windows on the right side of the scan that show the differences.

It looks like:

Up to 4/70, the pump was held on by two studs and a bolt at the lower hole. From 5/70 till 7/73, it looks like three studs.

From 8/73 till ?? it looks like two (screw - machine?) and a bolt.

My car was made in 5/70 so somebody fooled with the recipe and removed the lower stud and installed a bolt. When I installed a new fuel pump, I put a stud in the lower hole but couldn't get the pump to clear the stud. Looking at Arne's picture, I see the stud is just long enough to get the nut and washer on and torqued. My stud was longer which was what made me install the bolt instead.

Good luck with your cars!

Doubtful that any of these cars a fuel pump that was originally installed and has been left untouched for all of these years.
I'm pretty certain mine is still original. The car still has less than 60,000 miles, and it sure looks right...

I went back and re-looked at all the effected pages of the microfiche and here is what is called out:

Per Microfiche page 13-3 number 26 two studs in the top P/N#08223-84210 and the middle inset up to 4/70 had a bolt in the bottom number 20 P/N#08110-03562 bolt hex with washer. From 5/70 to 7/73 calls out three studs. P/N# 08223-84210. From 8/73 lower inset number 21 two machine screws in the top with number 22 washers plain. Still uses the number 26 stud P/N# 08223-84210 on the bottom with a different gasket.

Thanks everybody -- So I guess that it depends on what month your car was built as to whether it was two studs and a bolt or three studs. It kind of makes sense because the two heads I have that had studs (2) still in them are E31s and should be off some of the earliest examples of the 240 lending credance to the two studs/1 bolt set up until 4/70. This has been an interesting thread if I do say so myself, glad I started it. Next time I'll check the parts CD if I can find where I mislaid it. You people are the most helpful and knowledgable folks I know when it comes to these cars. Thanks again.
