Ravencree Posted October 11, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 11, 2006 You people have been great to me about info and finding parts for my 1976 280Z! I bought this car for a side line project about 2 years ago. Bought it for about $1,800 runs fine but! needs alot of $ and work...its a california car so there is no rust at all, but all the bushings, wheels and tires need to be replaced. And I would like to modify the Engine to performe better, I love the car and get noticed all the time (cops to) My husban actually bought the car for me and he helps me work on it (most of the time)... ......OK here is my question! is this car worth it putting all this money and work into it? My husban told me he will get pissed off if he spends alot of money and his time into it and them for me to loose intrest in the car and sell it later on. Can I sell the car for what I put into it? I see allot of these cars for cheap but they need alot of work done to them. also to....it is a 1976, does anyone now what year they dont smog a car in California? Marty Rogan Posted October 11, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 11, 2006 Raven,What you should do is a personal thing, depending on your family situation. But you did say that you love the car. The things that you mentioned it needs aren't really all that expensive to replace. Do a little at a time, as budget permits, while you drive the car. The better it gets, the more you will enjoy it. Just be aware. You have a Z, so you ar inflicted with Z Fever, for which there is only one cure, owning a Z!! I had a point in my life when I didn't own a Z for 11 years. Z Fever came back stronger than ever and now I own 2 240Z's!!Just drive the car, enjoy it and be happy! My two cents.Marty
Ravencree Posted October 11, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted October 11, 2006 thx Marty! yes I do have the fever but want to modify the motor (Small block or Race (6) Motor) but here in Calif. they are stricked on mods on smog cars if you get my drift....I was maybe thinking going to a older Z so I can miss the Smog issues.......although Fuel Injection is very nice.... Montezuma Posted October 11, 2006 Share #6 Posted October 11, 2006 thx Marty! yes I do have the fever but want to modify the motor (Small block or Race (6) Motor) but here in Calif. they are stricked on mods on smog cars if you get my drift....I was maybe thinking going to a older Z so I can miss the Smog issues.......although Fuel Injection is very nice....Then buy a 75Z if you like the Fuel Injection or modify a pre 76 to a Fuel Injected system. I have a 78 that is in rough shape but instead of putting a lot of money into it I instead choose to get another Z. I ended up with a 73 with just under 100k miles. I don't regret the move, the 78Z sits by waiting for the day when either I get more spare cash(two girls in college) or the state changes the smog waiver program. Enjoy the ride.:classic:
sblake01 Posted October 11, 2006 Share #7 Posted October 11, 2006 do you know if this will ever change soon?I wish! I own a 78Z and a 79 810 that were both about to become exempt when they changed the rolling 25 year rule.
beandip Posted October 11, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 11, 2006 Ravencree, to answer your question about receving your money out of your car if or when you sel it . Much depends on who does the work and how well it is done. If you must pay labor costs , then no not likely. If you highly modify the Z , V-8 and such . Not likely again . I see V-8 Zs for sale all the time and rarely do they bring much when sold , at least compaired to what was sunk into them . That is my 2cents . kenz240z Posted October 12, 2006 Share #9 Posted October 12, 2006 Being an old car nut, I have yet to buy a new car from a dealer. Instead, I prefer to find a cool old car and work on it here & there until I have the engine running strong, the brakes & suspension rebuilt (for a safe, smooth ride), a nice interior and nice paint. I do as much of the work as I can (mechanical, body work, paint & interior), which saves me a few bux. I figure that if I put a few thousand into making an old car look & drive like new I come out ahead of having that new, shiny car. For one thing, I can take my time and not spend a lot at once. And when I'm done, I have a car that is way cooler (to me, anyway!) than the new cars out there, and best of all I don't have a car payment! With regards to your 280Z, I say have fun with it, make it how you want it and enjoy! =Enigma= Posted October 14, 2006 Share #12 Posted October 14, 2006 My guess is that unless all you do is spend enough money to get it running and then sell it immediately, you mught get your money back, but that largely depends on the condition of the car, and how mych you spend. In most cases, if you go hig wild and put lots of money into it, you will never get your money back out of it, but you will get tons of satisfaction out of it and sometimes that's worth more then money. I have a 73' and I can say first hand that it is very nice not to have to worry about smog inspections or expensive repairs to get it smog-able. Hopefully it wil stay that way for a long time to come. On related but somewhat, bizarre note, does anyone else know and appreciate the words to the song Red Barchetta by RUSH?
