Timing a little off

I have just gotten my car running and can't get my timing in range with the light. I'm against the bolts on distributor adjustment and still 3/4 of a inch from 0. Am I one tooth off on shaft on oil pump. I,m running a 82 ZX motor with P-79 head with exhaust baffles cut out and smoothed, Schneider cam, headers and Weber DGVs. I changed it over to electronic ignition out of a 80ZX with a Crane coil. Anybody have any answers?

yep drop the oil pump and index one tooth in the proper direction and you will have spark able to adjust in correct range. I use a 5 inch m8 bolt with the head cut off as a guide pin. Makes the job less frustrating. Or if you have help grab the shaft with visegrips and extra set of hands. drop oil pump move shaft to correct location put oil pump back. Either way a long bolt to keep from juggling everything is a cheap aid.

I had this same problem, but for some reason I could not get it to line up. No matter what I tried. So I ended up turning the oil pump until the dizzy rotor lined up with one of the points. I moved the plugwires two points clockwise. Maybe it's a little mickey mouse, but it works fine. I'm telling you this because if you have the tang pretty close (say 15-20 degrees off) then moving it one notch will put it at the far range in the other direction and it will be impossible to adjust the timing correctly. I do not know why this happened to me, but I haven't had any problems moving the plugwires.

I can elaborate more if necessary. Hopefully it won't be necessary.
