Hi all. I'm getting ready to pull a L28 engine out of a 75 280 but the engine does't have the brackets used to connect the hoist chains to the block. I was wondering how I should connect the hoist without these brackets.

When I yarded the ZX engine out of my '71, it only had the bracket on the front, not on the rear. I borrowed a rear bracket from my other car. Perhaps there's another Z-er in your area who could loan you brackets?

Or you could simply bolt the chain to the same bolts/studs/holes that the brackets would use.

Or.......fabricate two 3/16" T x 1" W x approximately 5" long aluminum straps with through holes on each end. This will also keep the chain away from the engine parts. Also, do yourself a favor and use one of those adjustable angle riggs....it will make getting the engine/tranny in or out much easier by allowing you to adjust the angle of dangle!

I took of my head first and then put the head bolts back in the holes and threded the chain around the bolts and it pulled out easy. And I was using a tractor..........

Did you re-use the head bolts after doing that? Perhaps they'd be just fine but it makes me nervous.

No after that I bought a new set from motorsport.

When pulling a motor from an 80ZX in the JY I jacked a few seatbelts from nearby junkers and tied them to the front hoist point and around the rear of the intake manifold where the EGR pipe is mouted. Worked like a charm the first time pulling the engine, and the second time mounting it on the engine stand.

Thanks for the help quys. A guy i know has a 240 with the brackets still on the head so he's going to let me borrow them. Hopefully that will be all I need.

I removed the brackets on my Z when doing the head gasket swap, and lost them. When I pulled my engine/put it back in, I just ran a length of chain from one engine mount to the other, and then tied a small piece of rope to the water inlet on the back of the head and then to the middle of the chain where the hoist was hooked onto. This worked really well, and was easy to maneuver as well.

Here's yet another idea...

on one of my parts cars I had already sold the head and then needed to pull the rest of the engine and tranny out so....

I took a tow chain and threaded it through the slot in the motor mounts around under the block through the slot on the other motor mount back up to the top of the block where I attached both sides of the chain to the engine hoist and out it all came with ease.

If that does not make sense please let me know and I'll get a pic and illustrate what I'm talking about.

Were you using a boom pole on a 3-point hitch?

No I just got the strongest chain the I could buy, wrapped it around all the head bolts and wrapped in around the tractor bucket.
