electrical relay? '73 Z

I've been told that the '73 Z had some stuff that was exclusive to that year. In the engine compartment; firewall; passenger side, there is a small electrical relay(?) box (about 2 1/2" X1" X 1 1/2" deep). It has a box plug that plugs into the wiring harness.

Mine has fried and now the car won't start..guessing... relay to the fuel pump? Have looked high and low in junk yards (found a '72 & a '74 with no such thing) and at the Nissan Dealers (nothing showing on the fiche system).

Help!:ermm:

I have a 71 so can't say that I would have something equivalent to look at to help you out, but have heard that that is the location for the fusible link box.

You also don't mention the color of the wires going into that connector nor the color of the wires on the wiring harness where it connects. That may be a big help in getting it identified.

The only thing that I have seen different on a wiring diagram for a 73 240z and a generic 240z wiring diagram is the INT' RELAY pictured in the diagrams. I don't know if that is your problem. it would help if you had a picture of it or you know the color of the wires that go into it so you can trace back the wires on a diagram.

I posted a pic of the diagram on another post:

http://www.240z.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2971

it located in the middle of the bottom part of the pic.

I just went through and rewired my entire 73 240z and i can tell you that the relay on the firewall is emission controll related, i cant remember exactly what it is called right now but if you wait till wednesday i can look it up and tell you for sure what it is and does. Just in case your interested i have the relay i took off my car that i will let you have if you want one, but i am not sure if it works or not as all the emissions stuff is removed from my car now.

Long story short your car should work without it. As for the fuel pump question are you sure you have an electric one, i know 73 are supposed to but mine doesnt and never did, not trying to insult you or anything just covering the bases. Always check the basics and work back to more complicated, if you fried that then it is possible that there was some sort of electrical spike and you fried other relays/components as well.

Is it an "ignition interlock" override? Seems my 74 and 73 *had* a relay there, it was an emergency switch that allowed the car to be started when the system failed. I believe it had to do with the seatbelt warning light/buzzer, etc, etc.

I just tried to reconnect the system inmy 74- suddenly after reconnecting the sensors under the seats, the ignition didn't work. The switch in the engine bay is already gone, so i unhooked 'em again, and now it works fine again.
