Quick stupid question

Sorry, I have been searching, but am out of time (work starting), I just got my 77' 280z and need to change the oil and plugs and some other things.

Questions:

1) how much oil fits in the engine?

2) any special spark plugs I need? where to get them?

3) where to get an air filter? what type?

I believe that the L28 uses just under 5 quarts of oil, the spark plugs I use are whatever AutoZone says to use. I think mine are Bosch Platinum single electrode type. If you can find NGK's use those. NGK is under a new name nowadys I believe. The airfilter can be bought through AutoZone, but it will have to be ordered...they don't carry them in stock. However, I do see them for sale on ebay brand new still in box all the time. Hope this all helps!

Only get NGK plugs, accept no substitutes! Bpr6es if memory serves.

Do not use platinum, splitfire, or any of the other reccommended "upgrades" if you want the car to run right. Spending money on these special plugs is wasted on the Z. Standard NGKs are what the car was designed to use-anything else is just wasteful.

you may have trouble finding the early non-resistor type plugs, I've got BPR6EY-11 in my 1977 280z. I just went and looked.

B: 14mm fine thread

P: premium platinum

R: Resistor type

6: heat range (lower number= hotter plug with NGK)

E:19mm thread reach

Y: V-grooved electrode

11: 1.1mm gap (.044")

You could get away with running a BKR6ES-11 if you don't want the platinum option. Ask them for '81-'83 280zx non-turbo plugs if they can't find you the right ones for your application at the parts store, the only difference is that these are resistor type plugs which helps with RFI suppression..

Actually, in this application, the P is for Projected tip. P only indicates platinum if it is the first letter.

The gap is the final part, after the dash. The 11 numbers are good for electronic ignition, if you have points you'll probably want to stay with an 8 there.

I have used BPR6EY-11 in an L24 with the ZX ignition quite successfully.

scrap the stock air filter and put a k&n on there. you can actually feel the difference. I thought I was just being silly but when my son drove the 280zx he said what did you do it is faster. I used an exhaust elbow of the proper diameter plus k&n has a filter calculator on their site which will tell you how much filter you need. Or go to motorsport and pay $130 for the same thing that cost me $50 (20 elbow and 30 filter)

Hey guys here's a good question for you. With this same car (mine is also 77 280) but I have removed FI and installed good old SU's... what plugs do you think would be best?

Carbs don't change anything for the plugs, so use whatever is recommended for the ignition you have. If it's the stock '77 ignition, use the plugs for a '77.

22401-P8816 is the Nissan part number for a NGK B6ES-11. That's the OEM plug. Not resistor, not projected tip, not platinum, not v-groove, etc. They are abundantly available. If you can't find them, or get the runaround from your local Nissan dealer (gee, imagine that!), just order them from www.nissanparts.cc. That's were I get mine. They even cost less there than at the dealer.
