agemeansnothing Posted October 21, 2006 Share #1 Posted October 21, 2006 My engine is out yay! The previous owner obviously liked to go off roading in my beloved Z...... and really didn't know anything about these cars. For one I was taking off everything off my block. The timing chain tenser is supposed to have a spring in it to keep the timing chain tense and it had no spring:angry: ........ another thing the clutch has been replaced before, obviously he drove this car hard. Ok back on the subject, I want to clean up my engine bay but there is so many hoses etc. Should I just take everything out to clean and sand the rust off? Or would it be easier just to try to work around everything? Thx Ian
zbane Posted October 21, 2006 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2006 Ian, if you decide to tear everything out and then clean, do yourself a HUGE favor-figure out a good marking system so that after cleaning, you'll know exactly where everything goes. Otherwise, you'll be facing the question "Where does this go, and what end goes where?"Once you decide on a good marking system, I would take everything out, so you can really get in there for cleaning. Good luck.

boyblunda Posted October 21, 2006 Share #4 Posted October 21, 2006 IanIf you decide to do only half a job you will likely regret it for as you long as you can bear it and then you may well end up ripping it all out and doing it over again. From what I think I have heard you saying about the way you want to attend to other matters on your vehicle you seem to be looking at doing a good job so do not short change yourself by doing anything less here.Having all those fiddly bits will only get in the way and cause frustration. Get a camera and take several shots before you remove anything, mark the locations of the pieces you remove on the photo and put the same mark in / on the plastic sealed bags you put the pieces into. My two bob's worth (= 20cents in Australia).
agemeansnothing Posted October 21, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted October 21, 2006 Thanks guys, I just wanna get as much done as I can in the engine bay while my engine is out, and I thought about it and cleaning everything and replacing all the bushings seems to be a good idea. agemeansnothing Posted October 22, 2006 Author Share #6 Posted October 22, 2006 Also I have a pretty good amount of rust under my battery tray so I'll do that too while I do the rest of the engine bay.
agemeansnothing Posted October 22, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted October 22, 2006 Ok started on the project today, took a bunch of things out that I didn't need left from the fuel injection, it's actually easier than I expected and yes I'm labeling everything. What I want to do is get the wiring harness not all the way out just flipped over on the passenger side's fender so that they can sandblast. I'll take some pics. ilikemyz Posted October 22, 2006 Share #8 Posted October 22, 2006 cool job, in regards to sandblasting, is it better to invest in a sandblasting machine?? and do the job ones self?? or is it real costly to if you go to bring it to some guy, and have him do it for you, OR, (3) is it almost as good, by doing a 98% sand job on the rust in this area, and in any case, after rust removal, would it be better under the car to put a rubberized undercoating spray, or , to do a primer , and paint. just a few bridges i will have to decide on someday
agemeansnothing Posted October 22, 2006 Author Share #9 Posted October 22, 2006 Under the car however I'm going to take it my brothers college class and the students do it for free since their learning. For the sandblasting machine however I am just renting one for a while, keep in mind bags of sand are about $15.00-$20.00. I don't know how much it would cost to get a guy to do it for you, it is actually quite simple to do.

agemeansnothing Posted October 23, 2006 Author Share #11 Posted October 23, 2006 Do not know exactly how much it would cost but I guestimate like $65.00 maybe? Found a sand blaster from Snap on which is $1360.00.
