Hi guys, 1971 240Z. Just fitted the stock air filter assembly and love it!....except it is scratched and showing signs of its old age.

I would like to refinish and paint it. If I have it media-blasted, can I get all of the original stickers to put back on it?

Also, is the sealing gasket still available?

I think I saw an old post about the original color, so I know others have done this, but I just really want to know if it is safe to media blast, or should I use chem paint stripper, or hand sand...?

Would it look good chromed? I am gonna have to have the bumpers re-done anyway, and thought chrome might look good for that custom touch.

whaddya all think?

I first shot my cleaner with Chevy orange and it is as Ed said vary close to OEM . When I painted my car yellow the orange stuck out like a sore thumb and I didn't like the look, personal preference, so I changed the color to Chrysler blue the same as the block. This blue is again vary close to OEM Nissan block color. I have heard that some of the Z s shipped to Aus. had blue air cleaners . Gary

Gary, I know what you mean there, it IS personal preference. I bought a can of blue spray paint from Classic Datsun for my block but couldn't get myself to use it, it sits on the shelf in my garage. I know it's the original look but I had to have a black block.

Thanks Ed, I keep meaning to get the progress on my car uploaded here. The engine is almost done, the dash gets installed next and then onto the body.

I seem to remember a similar post I didn’t care for the chrome air cleaner so went more stock. I found a close match for the air cleaner’s outer foam packing at McMaster website; I didn’t save the P/N. Media blasting shouldn’t be a problem; I used paint stripper and oven cleaner with good results. Primed and painted them got the decals from Banzai Motors http://www.zzxdatsun.com/

An early post suggested DE 1621 Old Ford Blue for the engine block and DE 1634 Low Gloss Black oil pan and engine mounts.

I personally used DE 1607 Chevrolet Orange-Red and then a clear coat for my 260z Air Cleaner.

I also painted a 74 ½ Air Cleaner using DE 1610 Pontiac Blue (I used either a white or gray primer first) also used the same color for the vapor canister clamp. (picture posted)

I know im digging up an old thread but is it safe to use spray paint to refinish the air box or would that be dangerous because it is flammable?

I would say it would be only be dangerous if you tried to paint it while still attached to a running engine. Presumably you'd take the air cleaner off to paint it. If things get so hot that the air cleaner paint gets burned then you've got bigger problems. The carbs are insulated from the head and have water passages that should keep them from getting hotter than the water temperature itself which, even with antifreeze, is way lower than the temperature that would burn paint.
