Truck wheels?

Recommended Posts

I thought this was interesting to find out. Not really sure if its true but.... My local tire store is telling me that the wheel lug pattern (4 on 4.5), offset (0) and size (R14, R15 or R16) is the equivalent to todays standard truck wheel. The standard truck wheel has a very slight negative offset but essentially 0. Problem is hardly anyone makes the 4 bolt pattern. This isn't anything new but he said I would probably have as much luck finding wheels for my Z shopping truck style rims as shopping performance rims.

I think I'm having a tough time finding rims because I don't like the newer styles where the rotor, caliper etc is so visible. It's kind of like running around naked! :tapemouth I save that for my wife!:D

The other thing kind of interesting is that on an R14 or R15 wheel if the profile 70, 60, 50 series gets too low the tire won't have the sidewall strength to hold up the weight of the car unless you get into the V or Z speed rated tires. Obviously this will be affected by tire width as well but thought this might help a few folks. The bottom line is I don't think it's real easy to find new wheels for Z's! AAuugghh!

I had found the same talk from my tire store here. The main part of this is there are few wheel makers out there doing A wheel for A rear wheel drive car. Hell 90% of the cars made today are front wheel drive. So the rwd wheel market is for the most part is truck, van, and suv.

Have your tire guy call A older (been around for years) wheel maker like american raceing wheels and see if they have some older inventory not in the new books.

After this year the only rearwheel drive car made by GM will be the corvette. :disappoin

Especially when it's an Aussie Car! Pontiac GTO = Holden.

You gotta love those f'n Holdens! a long history of Big V8 power mongers! There's only two contries in the world who would make cars like the Holdens.... The U.S. and Australia! No wonder we get along so well.

Hmm, Maybe I should change my online name to Calilime240Z!

I considered wheel adaptors pretty hard for awhile until I went to my local tire shop, Discount tire in this case, they won't touch a vehicle that has adaptors period. Won't even fix a flat. I was surprised. I guess there's too much liability with them if they aren't installed correctly or made of lesser materials. For me, it came down to convenience.

I could have gone to the adaptor and front wheel drive wheel but I would have had to drive an hour plus round trip just to get the wheel/tire serviced and decided it wasn't worth it.

FWIW, Porsche runs wheel adaptors as standard practice from what I have heard but they're engineered for them.
