I have my '78 OEM alloy wheels & tires sold and was wondering what my best option is to ship them to there new owner. Anybody got an idea what one of these rims & tires weighs? Shipping is on the east coast.

I have shipped several set of rims all over the country, most recently from Ga. to Cali, via FEDEX for no more than $38. Granted I didn't ship them with the tires...

I put a 1/2" threaded rod through one of the lug holes in each wheel, put a square (larger than the rim) of 5/8" scrap plywood and a large flat washer on either end, and a similar square of 3/4" foam board insulation between the wood and each rim(5 pieces of insulation) and tightened the lock nuts, cut off the rod just outside of the nut, properly tightened, the rod is in such tension the assembledge can't come loose. I have had a problem with loosening only once-I got slack and didn't use lock nuts...

The wood overhangs the rims, the foam centers and cussions the rims, and when tightened well, they simply can't be hurt from a 4' drop onto a flat surface-but it takes some tools and effort to unpack...

Get your weight, size, and address info, visit Fedex.com and use Drop of at Fedex owned location(There is a Kinkos convevient to you?) and you will have the price before you ship.

This is the cheepest way I have found to ship rims safely.

Since you are shipping with tires on, if the sidewall is outboard of the edge of the rim, you won't need foam, and I would probably cut circles with a diameter a little larger than the high poit of the sidewall.

I am guessing these rims/tires weigh about 40 lbs. per. Looks like Fed Ex limits you to 150 lbs. Might have to ship in 2 boxes.

Try greyhound bus lines also. They have shipping also, and sometimes it works out cheaper with big items. The only glitch is pick-up and drop off for buyer and seller. If there isn't a bus station close it isn't convient.I shipped a complete dash from a zx turbo for 65$ and the box was 6 ft tall.

I have had wheels shipped from Tire Rack to Hawaii by FEDEX. They came in two packages - two rims in cardboard boxes strapped together with nylon strapping.

I have also had wheels with tires mounted shipped by same to Japan through US mail. They had cardboard circles on both sides of the wheel/tire and were taped with lots of clear packaging tape. This was 4 pieces. It didn't cost me too much to ship, but it did go surface vice air mail.

The tires are not worth their shipping weight unless they are brand new unmounted.... NEVER ship a rim with a tire mounted... the tires should go in the trash before you even consider selling the wheels...
