So I found one sweet deal in my Z for 200 bucks. The thing is I'm currently an autobody student so I wanted a car that I could use as a project. Thus the Z. After my autobody classes are over I'm going to go into automotive itself. Anyway thats brief history on my Z. Its a 1978 280 and I'm having to replace the head but as I'm doing it I'm running into alot of problems.

Heres some so far. I broke the throttle return spring cuz it was rusted out. Various bolts and nuts have been broke/rounded But the biggest problem is the EGR Valve. I bent the piping going from it into the exhaust manafold trying to the pipe off so I could get the exhaust off the head. I'm thinking about getting an after market header for it but they dont seem to have anything for the EGR Valve so I'm just wondering how important it really is. Please help.

Sounds like you've got the best of both worlds; A sweet deal on a 280Z and the means to address any rust and body work that needs done. I'm hoping that you'll be able to paint her at school when the body is finished.

Rusted springs, bolts, nuts, (fasteners) can be removed and replaced with new. The EGR is a part of the emissions system and helps clean your exhaust so I think it's important. I'm almost certain I've seen headers with the EGR pipe connection. The elbow pipe from the EGR valve to the header can still be purchased new from Nissan, about $40 if I remember correctly.

It's not unusual to run into problems while working on an older car. The number of problems is usually in direct correlation to the amount paid for the car.

You'll find answers to your problems here by posting questions and using the search engine.

Have fun and good luck with your car!
