Posted November 6, 200618 yr comment_188597 I want to replace my old boot. I do not know which part of the linkage to take apart to free the old boot. Is it the end at the accelerator pedal or the swivel mechanism at theh firewall in the engine compartment? How are the ball swivel joints disengaged from the ball on the swivel? November 6, 200618 yr comment_188602 The plastic socket pops off the ball, and then unscrews from the rod. The boot slips over the rod, and presses partly through the firewall. Shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes on a bad day with Murphy on your shoulder!WIll Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22207-accelerator-rod-boot-help/#findComment-188602 Share on other sites
November 7, 200618 yr comment_188604 Before you unscrew the socket, wrap a piece if tape on the threads snug to the socket to mark the length. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22207-accelerator-rod-boot-help/#findComment-188604 Share on other sites

November 7, 200618 yr comment_188704 I like to squirt some lithium grease in there before trying to pop the ball out of the socket. Those sockets get brittle and will break with too much stress. December 17, 200618 yr comment_192884 Mine was getting stuck whenever I let my foot get a little heavy, and it turns out that upon just touching the boot to try to lube it, it fell to pieces. I got a new one, but I was unable to remove the ball from the rod to get it through the boot, so I made a very small precise cut in the narrow end of the boot and pushed the entire ball through. Then I took a very small amount of crazy glue and closed up the incision. Once it dried, I made sure there was no binding inside the boot with the push rod, greased it a little, and replaced it. Now it works great. The super glue added a little bit of stiffness to the end of the boot, but nothing to be concerned about. December 17, 200618 yr comment_192894 I've made it a point to replace all the rubber pieces that I can get. the only rubber piece that vcan't get is the one in the inner fender, behind the headlamps, that the headlamp wires go through. I wil probably get a big grommet and a piece of tubing (bicycle inner tube?) and maybe some zip-ties.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22207-accelerator-rod-boot-help/#findComment-192894 Share on other sites
