Posted November 22, 200618 yr comment_190266 :knockedou I just would like to know who's using their 240Z automatic for week-end race. After all weren't all the “Chaparal†auto box. How is it on the track... If you have enough power, could it be torquy(?) enough to be efficient on a track session? I am big Kart fan and... and most of them have no gear box. So I am thinking that with BIG (read strong, nor enormous) braking power and a good susp. set-up it could be good fun the keep up with the 5 spd box, no? November 28, 200618 yr comment_190747 I cant speak from experience since I have always had manual trannies, but it should be fun while it lasts  I cant say that I have ever seen an automatic Z at an autocross either, surely someone has done it. My thought is you are missing half the fun if you cant stir the gears yourself. You can always make a backup plan to swap in a manual when the auto dies.Good Luck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22384-auto-crossing-auto/#findComment-190747 Share on other sites
November 28, 200618 yr comment_190748 Fred, I haven't seen many Automatics on the autoX courses. However, last year I was on a motoring tour with a bunch of cars. Through a very technical section, a single track of on-and-off paved curves through the low hills of Central California, I was chasing a 73 240Z. The Z driver was doing quite well. Although I had no trouble keeping up with him, he was going as fast as I felt I would go if I was leading. Even if there was an opertunity, I had no reason to pass. When we stopped to take a break, I was very surprised to find his car was an automatic! Especially since the road conditions made me use most of my gears quite often. November 28, 200618 yr comment_190761 Other than formula one cars that have a tiptronic style transmission. I know you would be better off with a 5spd. There is an option for a sequential transmission that would be very trick (read expensive). If you are talking about the stock Z transmission, you would be better off autocrossing a tractor... November 28, 200618 yr comment_190763 I agree with Ron. The stock three speed automatic is not responsive enough, and the ratios are too wide. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22384-auto-crossing-auto/#findComment-190763 Share on other sites

November 28, 200618 yr Author comment_190775 Thanks guys... I had 2 5 speed 240Z before this one. I also had a 280ZX with the 5 speed... My daily driver is a 192 hp corolla 1.8 litter TS with 6 speed... I do know how good is a manual gear box. The thing is my current 240Z is coming straight from California with Aircon (ditched, don't need that) and an autobox. As I have my home made 2,8 (f54/p90 with a ported head fast cam en 3 45 dellorto on a 6/2/1 with a twice pipe) waiting in my barn... I will bolt it anyway and let you know if I can kick a few a.s around here.BTW : last jully I did 2 full lap of the real... Le Mans track in a 240Z going at full speed... woaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh Steve Mac Queen I am coming... in a yellow 240Z auto Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22384-auto-crossing-auto/#findComment-190775 Share on other sites
