OK My brother, a fairly well off close to retirement engineer, and 1957 chev owner, who talked me into buying and dragging home my 72z, just bought a 1972 Porche 911 (with a 5 speed) restoration project. My own restoration project hasn't even started yet even tho I have owned the car for about 3 years now (kids in elementary and highschool).

so... what do I need to do to my z to keep pace? I don't want him to have a better car than me.

correction, its a '71 911 targa with a S engine put in it in 1986. Apparently the engine was built to put out over 200 HP.

Im thinking Im going to need at least a 280zx turbo engine and 5 speed swap.

plus handling upgrades...

You'll need to have a good motor, and make sure he is staying with vintage 185/70-15 tires. Don't let him run modern staggered size rubber!

Other option is to compare invoices once both restorations are complete... Your total will beat his comparatively at the bank....

Ditch the 2.4 and go with a 2.8 motor. Get a set of tripple 45mm carbs, have the head (E-31, 88, N42) ported and polished by a company who knows Z's like www.rebelloracing.com , or just have them make the entire motor. You should be able to get 250-275 HP or even 300+ with a bored and stroked 3.2 motor. Get a set of light weight wheels (forged AL) and the stickiest rubber you can (IMO 15x7's with 225/50's is enough), get Tokico Illumina shocks and a set of www.arizonazcar.com heavy duty springs and the standard after market sway bars and poly bushings every where and the AZC brake kit (the Z's weakness compared to the 911). On the street your car should be very competitive with his 911 probably even faster in a straight line and handel as well, he might have you with the brakes though. Remember you can do all you want to the car but it will not matter it you do not have a very good set of tires.

Go Pure Stock with your Restoration... and get it done. You'll have a Classic Car and he'll have a hot rod.

Then go buy another 240-Z, and drop that Turbo L28 in... properly set up it's and easy 300HP... At that point you'll have a Classic Car and a hot rod.. but he'll still only have a hot rod.

Then go buy a nice, fairly well kept 70-72 911 (watch for RUST!!) ...make it an "E" but one that is still all stock. Don't do anything to it, but own it. Drive it once every couple of weeks..(it will make you really appreciate the 240-Z all the more).

At that point you'll have a fully restored Classic Car to show, another Classic to own (stock 911) and a hot rod. All of which will have cost you about the same amount of money that he's going to poor into that 911 hot rod....

If you shop very carefully, don't get in an hurry and buy that two owner, all stock, 70-72 911 at the right price - then just hold it for five years, you'll most likely double your money. Buy the right car and DON'T PUT ANY MONEY INTO IT... remember the game here is to Beat the Brother... with car knowledge and strategy...

Owning both a stock 240-Z and a stock 911 at the same time, you'll have the creditability to dis the 911 all over the place. Having a 240-Z with 300HP and a good suspension set-up, you'll be able to out run him on the track as well... How Good Can It Get?....
