Since my Z sets for several months at a time, that's one of the reasons I run an electric pump in addition to the mechanical pump. You can prime the fuel system with the electric pump before you crank the engine over.

Put a one way valve in the fuel line just ahead of the fuel pump, and it will keep prime(if you install it the right way...) If it doesn't, you probably need to tighten the clams or replace the hoses.

......If I wasn't afraid of using up my battery trying to start the engine, it would have eventually paumped gas into the carbs.

Now I know if I let it sit for a month it will take a while for the pump to prime.

You should get a battery maintainer of some kind. I use one on my 320 Pickup when it sits for long periods and it keeps the battery charged.
