My 240z Project.

Hey everyone. Bought my 1973 240z Nov 26, 2006. I bought it as a rolling chasis. It had a v8 placed but removed when I bought it. My plans for it will come next year, as for now I will either sand it and primer so the rust doesnt spread and eat through the metal. Heres how it is in my barn. (56k bewarey)

I havent done a complete check. I washed off the rain water and wiped it down. Im not sure what Ill be doing with the rust since its my biggest concern (if you watch the 240z project on mull.tk). But, as of now I plan on either sanding it off and primering or have it sand blasted and either apply por15 or some primer. I just found out that mmagnus had a really nice z around my area (Lafayette). Hope he could give me some pointers.

Preservation is your first step and main goal at this point.. Get on that as soon as possible.

Sand the rusted area down to shinny metal where ever you can. Even then, you will still have rust in cracks and crevases.

Go to an Automotive Paint Store and get a quart of Ospho.

Ospho is a mild phosphoric acid solution. Applied to rust, it will chemically convert the iron oxide (rust) to iron phosphate. That will stop the rust.

Ospho is mixed at a mild solution level, so it won't hurt painted surfaces if rinsed off with water... but you don't want to let it sit on a concrete floor for more than an hour without rinsing it off with water.

You can strip the entire body down to bare metal, or do individual spots at a time - but address any rusted area's as soon as possible - rust grows EVERY DAY. Once the rust has been stopped..(about 24 hours after the application of the Ospho), wipe the area down with lacquer thinner and apply an epoxy primer to seal the metal against moisture in the air.

I would not recommend using POR-15 as a primer... a good epoxy primer over bare metal will allow you to sand the area later when your ready to actually do the paint and body work..

Glad to see that another Z will be coming back to life. Always nice for this to happen. :-)

What engine do you plan on dropping in that thing? Keep the V8 that was in it?

A lot of work cut out for you there, but once it is all done, it will be one sexy beast. :devious:

I should do the same thing that you are doing with my Z, but with no money, I am going to wait till have several grand lying around to do this, as I would want to knock it out in a couple of months instead of waiting sometimes years like a lot of people seem to do. With no cancer rust found so far, I am not really worrying about it atm though.

That car must of been in the desert or something. First time I have seen floorboards look that good in non restored mode. Good luck. The 73 is a bit of an odd year. You should use these forums as much as you can. There are alot of good people that are willing to help someone in need.
