Bob,

Appreciate your insights on the Z.... That it went for $12.K was a surprise.

Didn't make it to BJ this year, was ready to go and on Wed the ice storms came in and the weather reports for Phoenix were none that great. Spent two days last year in the mud and rain and I wasn't going to go thru that again this year just to look....

Anyway, saw that a Triumph TR-6 went for $26.400.... seems kinda high. Did you happen to see it?

Brought more than I thought it would at BJ - but I concur with Bob, it's was bought at about the right price given the condition.

To me the real surprise was the 71 M/B 280SL - that went for $61,600.00. I've liked these cars for years and years... and for many many years they went for $18K to $25K....

Current NADA gives it High Retail of $46,400 today

Also saw a 1970 Mercury Cougar 428 Eliminator....sell for $128,700.00 .... Don't ask me what I sold my 69 428 Eliminator for ten years ago ....(I'm going to be sick...).

Current NADA gives it High Retail of $99.960

I was pleasantly surprised as well that the subject (below) went for nearly $13k plus the 10% buyer's commission. I thought it would go for about $9k to $10k. As I have mentioned before in this thread and others over the past couple of years, I would love to see what a nicely & correctly restored 240Z would go for at the BJ Auction.

Well, where do I start. First off the rear panel is the wrong color LOL. Wait a minute that's another thread. My opinion: That's one awful looking car. I don't think that car will fetch $8000.00. I would put money on that. Maybe $5500.00 tops. That's my guess. We will see. Now if the interior was also customized at the same level as the exterior it might be worth just a little more. The steering wheel is ridiculous, the car has a half dash cap. The interior doesn't even look detailed and those holes in the door panels for speakers are really choice. Of course the shift knob maybe should sort of match that thing called a sterring wheel. There is probably a lot more that we can't see. The flames, maybe on a Big Dog or Texas Chopper but on a Z it just doesn't work. No disrespect intented. Just my thoughts on this car.

Auctions like Barrett Jackson are venues I think for original stock cars of any kind if the seller wants the big bucks. I have watched almost all the auctions and have been to a few and looking at that thing the owner will be dissapointed. I have seen custom cars go for a lot of money a few times but they are American Muscle cars that are highly cutomized specimens. Almost one of a kind vehicles.

Now the way BJ works is they get if I am not mistaken 8% from the seller, 8% from the buyer, and the seller covers the transportaion to and from the auction. Most cars have no reserve unless they are a one of a kind or a five of a kind, that sort of car.

I hope this person knows this which I am sure she does because she may get stung and end up letting that vehicle go for a lot less then her expected price.

I didn't read all the posts I am shocked that the car went for that kind of money. Just not a good example of a Z car. However after thinking about it 240z cars are unique specimens and it is quite possible that someone just wanted a Z car and is not in the Z community loop. Maybe the buyer bought it up with the interest in getting it back to stock and original condition If that's the case I suppose it wouldn't take as much funds then to restore a car from scratch. Although from one of the posts where it was mentioned that the undercarriage looked like it was sprayed with black paint I would say that is far from what one does when Restoring a Z car's undercarriage or any undercarriage for that matter.

Well just goes to show you how wrong I can be. Isn't the first and won't be the last.

I looked at this car as well. No rattle cans were used on this one. It drew a crowd in the tent area before the auction and other than the wheels it looked like it just came off the assembly line. They had it sitting on stands with mirrors aimed so you could see the detail work on the undercarrige. BYW isnt' hindsight much clearer than foresight??
