Side molding on 240 body

Do any of you know if the side molding on some of the 72 and 73 240's is stock? I've noticed a few on ebay and other classifieds that have the black strip running down both sides of the car. It doesnt look bad, but I like the cleaner look.

The 73 I just purschased has this but the car is still in transit, so I havent seen it in person. Is this molding screwed on, can it be taken off without showing any damage, etc. Any thoughts please let me know.

Here is a link to one on ebay that has the molding in case I'm calling it by the wrong term.

These were often added by dealers but did not come that way from the factory. My car had them installed with pop rivets so I don't think you can assume that they can be removed without showing damage. Even if they're somehow glued on you still risk damaging the paint. However, can can probably make the determination easily. Mine were actually two pieces: the silver portion that goes up against the car and the black portion which slips into the base. You can probably pull the black part out and look for the attachment points.

In my case - I applied the double-sided tape variety of side molding after the repaint to protect from parking lot incidents... The car did not have them originally. If your car does have the stick-on molding they can likely be removed with a hair dryer or heat gun.

These 'rub strips' were very common add-ons. Mine were pop-riveted on....if you carefully drill out the centers of the rivets, the metal track can be removed easily from the side of the car.

You'll have some small holes to fill, of course, but the car does look a lot better without that rub strip.
