commplexone Posted November 30, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 30, 2006 Just curious,Has anybody mounted a small electric fuel pump in the engine compartment instead of under the car or along the frame somewhere?
Mat M Posted December 1, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2006 It is my understanfing that electric FPs are better suited to push a load rather than pull it. I have never seen that application.
cremmenga Posted December 1, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 1, 2006 Tiss true always push, never pull!
hls30.com Posted December 1, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2006 Priming is the issue, and my understanding is that as long as the level of the pump is below the level in the tank, the fuel will flow to the pump anyway. That is to say if gas flows out of the line opened where you want to put the pump, you won't have a problem-as long as the line is big enough to keep up with the pump. Will
Arne Posted December 1, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 1, 2006 While everyone says you should mount it in back to push, I put one in the engine compartment of my yellow car, and it works fine there. Much easier to mount and wire. No problems.
Curtis240Z Posted December 1, 2006 Share #6 Posted December 1, 2006 The assumption is that an electric pump is usually a centrifugal design which is a better pusher than suction pump.
gogriz91 Posted December 1, 2006 Share #7 Posted December 1, 2006 I'm in the process of replacing mine and am going to try and relocate the new one back by the tank based on the push versus pull theory. I will say, it was easy to know when the old one quit 'cause I couldn't hear it whirring away up there when I turned the ignition on.
