Priming is the issue, and my understanding is that as long as the level of the pump is below the level in the tank, the fuel will flow to the pump anyway.

That is to say if gas flows out of the line opened where you want to put the pump, you won't have a problem-as long as the line is big enough to keep up with the pump.

I'm in the process of replacing mine and am going to try and relocate the new one back by the tank based on the push versus pull theory. I will say, it was easy to know when the old one quit 'cause I couldn't hear it whirring away up there when I turned the ignition on.
