4 speed

How do you identify a type A 4 speed from a type B 4 speed. I am still not sure of which collar length to use the long one or the short one. The 4 speed is in my 77. The problem is when I would put the clutch in I would have to go all the way to the floor to release the clutch which sometimes it did not release and would engage as soon as it came up. There was excessive free play between the slave cylinder push rod and clutch release arm when the clutch was disengaged. I put a new master and slave cylinder on but still had the excessive free play. The clutch disengaged but all the way to the floor. I bleed the lines well and adjusted the pedal. Today I put a new clutch kit in so every thing was new. The throwout bearing I took out had a short collar. I just recently received some information saying the type A used a long collar and the type B used a short collar. Where do I look on the transmission to see what type it is? Would welcome any input someone might have I'm tired of taking the tranmission in and out.

The length of the throw-out bearing collar - is related to the clutch assembly used - not to the type of transmission. Both the A and B type tranny have the same input shaft length.

Originally the 240Z Clutch Assembly (mainly the Pressure Plate) was THICKER when measured from the Flywheel to the Top of the Pressure Plate Fingers. Stronger springs were used in the 280Z Clutch Assembly (Pressure Plate) and the result was that the 280Z / 280ZX Pressure Plates are THINNER.

So today - if you order a clutch assembly for a 240-Z - you'll more than likely get a 280Z Pressure Plate anyway - as they are considered suitable replacements for the 240-Z units. In fact it's all most impossible to get the older thick 240-Z style...

There are three or four different lengths of throw-out bearing collars.. The shortest is used with the older 240-Z Pressure Plates... the medium and longer one's are used with the 280Z Pressure Plates..

The problem you describe - would indicate that you need the longer throw-out bearing collar.. If you don't have access to a good junk yard - you'll have order the part from your Local Nissan Dealer..

Is the clutch assembly you purchased - an OEM Nissan Part? It it is, you should be able to find out what year/model it was originally specified for (ie not superceded by) and then order the matching throw-out bearing collar. If the clutch assembly is aftermark - you might have to try a couple different throw-out bearing collars...
