In another thread someone had asked me the question about "roundtop or flattop" I know the 73's carbs were crap, and the current carbs on my 1973 are the "better" ones, but could they be original? My car is titled as a 73, and the vin plate shows 9/72, so could these be the original carbs, or do you think they were replaced. I would think if it was being sold as a 73 it couldnt have the older carbs, or am I wrong....just curious.

Page 8 of my Black Dragon catalog shows you car as being a 1973 model (12001-172732), based on your VIN. That said, I would venture to say your carbs have been swapped.

My 1972 has a production date of 7/72 it came with round tops. It was last of the 1972 models.

My 8/72 240Z - 98389 (titled as 72), came with roundtops, my 10/72 240Z - 108501 (titled as 73), came with flattops.

Interesting information on carbs and dates of manufacture!

my original suggestion of conversion date was based on some information in an old parts manual that I have and the cars I'm most familiar with. This leads me to wonder if "destination" had some bearing on it....(e.g. California cars may have required more smog stuff earlier...?) or maybe they just used up existing supplies of carbs they had on hand. I guess I should search the archive for the definitive answer, but that must come later as I have too much to do before I must leave for work at 6:00 a.m.

Production for the 1972 Model Year Datsun 240-Z's sold in North America ended 08/72. To date the highest VIN we have recorded is HLS30 100262.

Production for the 1973 Model Year Datsun 240-Z's sold in North America started 08/72. To date the lowest VIN we have found for the 73 Model Year is HLS30 1200031 with a build date of 08/72.

Nissan started the VIN's on the 1973 Model Year 240-Z's at HLS30 120xxx so that the 73 Models were easily identified or differentiated from the 72's and earlier. The 1973 Emissions and Safety Requirements from the Federal Government were far stricter... thus the change in the carb.'s and the 2.5 mph bumpers...

The 73 Models were 50 State Compliant.
