I need a bell housing for the '83 280z turbo model. any leads on this would be helpful. just for information, its a t-5 transmission, even though nissan doesnt list it in there books like that. my dad threw it out on me when i left for college and now im stuck trying to find one. my dad called all the junkyards to no avail, and z doctors in tampa also. any leads would be great!

The bolt pattern in the bellhousing is the same for all L series motors, including 4 cylinders, but the bellhousing itself is entirely different, the FS5 "B" nissan 5 speed (N/A Z and ZX up to 1983) has the bell housing cast integrally with the front half of the case, the Borg Warner T-5 used in the '82 and '83 280ZX turbo, has a removable bellhousing, that is to say you cannot use the bell off of a non turbo "B" nissan trans on a ZXT T-5, you could however, use the entire N/A trans behind an L28ET, you would have to have the N/A trans x-member and driveshaft also. At any rate, I happen to have the 280ZXT, T-5 bellhousing laying around from an old project...

you could also use the 82-83 T-5 behind an N/A L-series, although I don't know why you'd want to

I'm just finishing up rebuilding the second of 2 "B" boxes for a member here, and interestingly enough, the main shaft nut on the later model B's has reverse threads, I'd imagine to keep the mainshaft nut from backing off, as normal threads could loosen as they are the same "rotation" as the engine, all that holds the nut on is a groove on the main shaft with a peen...

I've also got a late model FS "C" box from a 240sx that I'm eventually going to install in my 370+ WHP turbo 240z, and the front countershaft bearing is much larger than the "b" trans, which is the very bearing that failed in one of the boxes I just rebuilt, as well as a spare I built for my own car. Cheers! :)
