A sign of things to come for vintage Datsuns?

The first Japanese car that truly mattered.

Just got my January '07 edition of Automobile and was pleased to see that the Datsun 510 has been featured in thier Collectible Classic section. Stop by the store and pick up a copy, or just flip over to page 106.

I don't have a scanner, just my camera phone, so here are some poor quality shots to whet the whistle.

These type of artilces have been out and around for a while so I wouldn't call it any kind of a sign. The article in the December Hemmings Sports and Exotic about rallying a 510 would probably be more interesting than a historical type article since you know the 'facts' aren't necessarily accurate.

Speaking of magazine articles. I saw in a classic type magazine an article about the restoration of a ferrari 250 GTO (a real one, not a 240z in bodykit) in England. Was interesting to see a GTO stripped back to its tube chassis. And last month there was an article about a 250GTO owner in the USA that uses his GTO as a daily driver.

510 are getting very hard to buy. Project cars are now selling for over $2.5K. recently a finished SR20 swapped beauty sold for $30K. Roadsters are also on the move up.

The market on NLA old stock Nissan parts are drying up. Soon restoration parts will be reconditioned or remanufactured for only the most valuble models.

I don't like it. I don't want my cars to be too valuble for me to enjoy as intended. I'm not running a museum. I have a stable of thoughbreds that need to be run hard.

So what can I run when I can no longer afford to break a Datsun? Toyota Soarer (Lex SC300), Z32, S14 instead of an S30? Toyota AE86 instead of a 510? Miata instead of an SR311? Can't modify any of them without taking them off the road for ever.

None of those choices have any soul for my tastes

Sport Compact Car is doing an article on my Z so, you should see a little more press for our old cars....

not to hijack, but what issue, ron?

That's not a hijack, it is in keeping with what I started the thread on -(though I realize I didn't word it too well)- the appearance and appreciation of our vehicles in general interest periodicals; and the possibly detrimental effects it will have on the availability/driveability of quality vehicles.

I love seeing attention given to our imports, but now that Automobile has focused attention on the 510, you just know that the price of them will shoot up.

There are benefits and drawbacks to this, of course.

Benefit-niche shops will continue (or resume) production of NLA parts.

Drawback-As Victor stated, parts will become more expensive, as the demand raises, and supply dwindles.
