first, will the hood from a 2x2 260z fit on a 280 coupe...and second, whats the best way to fill in rivet holes on the doors and fenders from the molding strips that used to be on them...there is no rust, just the holes..

BEST way.... MIG Welded

Second best way...Brazed

Third relatively good way .... Soldered

Fourth Fairly Good Way ... POR 15 Mesh with Power Mesh Backing, and filled with POR Patch on the front.

Absolutely WORST way ... Bondo.

Second WORST way .... Duct Tape from behind with tons of touch up paint in front.

All of them require work in a body shop to finish.

Yes, and even if you get a very good welder that can fill the hole in one or two spot welds ... and therefore minimum heat ... the heat and spark will still burn the paint surrounding the hole.

To recover from that you'll need to re-primer, re-paint and match paint or re-paint the whole fender/door.

not to concerned about the paint at this point, its going to be completely redone anyways when this is done....so im guessin that after the holes are welded its not gonna be all smooth and flush with the rest of the sheet metal, so how do i smooth it out so it is?

oops, pushed reply to soon....... anyways, so is that the part that the body shop will hafta do? reason im askin is im tryin to get as much of it done as i can so the cost wont be quite the killer that its otherwise gonna be..

Those are all fine and dandy but here's one more....

When you weld the holes, place a copper plate (available at most welding supply shops) behind the hole before you weld. The weld does not stick to the copper and the copper absorbs the heat. Make sure to spead out your welds, do a weld here, then over there, then come back over here, then go somewhere else. The heat has a lot less chance of warping the metal.

take your time and you should be fine.

just pick up a grinder and have a go!
