E-brake boot question

I got an e-brake boot for Christmas for my 76 280z, and the boot has four snaps on it. Well in my car, there aren't any snaps, there's just carpet and the car never had one on there when we bought it. It says on the pakage 70-78 240, 260, 280z so is the right one. Any way, my dad thought about buying velcro and seeing and taping it on the the carpet or buying the other side for the snaps and punching them into the carpet, but not sure which is the best way to mount it. What have you guys done to mount these since they don't have the clips?

If you want to, you can buy the snaps that use a screw to attach to the trans tunnel around the brake handle. Find a place that does boat/trailer covers, or maybe a place that does pickup tonneau tops. You'll need to remove the passenger seat and slide cover on the handle to see where the snaps will screw in.

My car didn't have one in it when I got it, and I didn't see any holes where screws may have been. Is there a usual reason?

Be careful about screwing anything in the e-brake area. Your fuel and brake lines are back there.

Tomarrow I'm going to a Z Specialist place and having new ball joints installed, so I will check to see what the guy who works there has to say about it and what he does.

Bart said it, the original transmission tunnel covering was the diamond vinyl. It had the male snaps attached to it.

You can buy snaps at fabric stores as kits. There are the sew in style as well as the hammer-rivet style. It all depends on how you want to attach them.

However, since you don't currently have the snaps in there at all, what's wrong with your Dad's idea? The velcro could be added to the e-boot easily and the other end attached to the carpet you already have on the tunnel.

Just be careful that the "hook" side of the velcro gets attached to the e-boot, and the soft fuzzy side to the tunnel.

Otherwise, if the boot should come off whether partially or completely, the "hooks" will be exposed and any unsuspecting knit type of clothing will be snagged. If your girlfriend's favorite slacks get ruined by that velcro, you'll be repairing more than the car.

I thought it was just on the 240's, didn't 260-280's have carpet?

Wow, thanks the information! That makes a lot more sence to me now that it used orginally have vinal and that's when it had the snaps. I'll have to go down to a craft store tomarrow to pick up some velcro for it and have a go at it.

I'm still learning about Z cars, but until now, I never knew that the 280's were installed with vinal either!

I know the 280s had carpet not vinyl on the tunnel. The replacement carpets never seem to have the snaps installed. Maybe to allow you a little leeway in installing the carpet.
