Posted January 20, 200718 yr comment_196233 Hi Folks... I ordered a few things from MSA, one of them being the BRE rear spoiler. When I placed the order for the spoiler, I asked the sales guy how the spoiler mounted on the hatch, he told me that it mounted to the side lip edge of the hatch, so I didn't think I would need to drill any holes into the hatch. Well that's not the case, to mount the spoiler I'll need to drill two 5/8 inch holes into the rear hatch something I'm really looking forward to doing on my fairly new paint job. The Datsun, and the 240z badges will also need to be removed and the mounting holes for them will need to be filled in, and painted. I can't rally decide if I should mount the spoiler or not... Part of me likes the clean design of how the back end of the Z looks, But on the other hand part of me feels that the back end lacks a little something... What do you guy's think I should do?? January 20, 200718 yr comment_196252 i agree and i agree, i keep changing my mind as to if i want one or not, it all comes down to what you want to do. Toecutter has his mounted with an adhesive which he says is more than strong enough, so strong it rips off the paint if you try to pull it off, so not sure if that would be that much of a help? and you could always just get a rubber thing to cover over the holes from the badges.if i get fender mirrors my thought is the spoiler is needed, but until then i think i will go without Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22999-bre-spoiler-install/#findComment-196252 Share on other sites
January 20, 200718 yr comment_196253 If your car was recently painted - just go get another rear hatch. Drill that one, and then have the body shop fill the holes from the badging, and paint the new rear hatch at the same time as they paint the rear spoiler.FWIW,Carl B. January 20, 200718 yr comment_196286 Herrr, my camera is down... but what I did was to fill the inside of the spoiler with isolation foam in can si I could glue/hide 4 strong magnets in it... then I used bondo to make it kind of sealed. Painting and a thin sheet of anti-skipping rubber... tada the cling on and off rear spoiler... up to now it's good to 100 mph and up... I havent tried it at full speed! But if it fly off it will be just a matter of more magnets!BTW I did the same trick with the badges... glued on a magnet... so I can go clean or Racing look in 30 second Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22999-bre-spoiler-install/#findComment-196286 Share on other sites

Carl, how plentiful are hatches these days, especially with vertical defogger glass? January 21, 200718 yr comment_196292 When I get mine painted (hopefully soon) I'm going with the 432 rear spoiler. I will be mounting a BRE spoiler from Les Cannaday on the front. January 21, 200718 yr comment_196338 Carl, how plentiful are hatches these days, especially with vertical defogger glass? Here's one. It doesn't look like it comes with glass though. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DATSUN-240Z-SERIES-1-REAR-HATCH-TAILGATE-PERFECT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ140713QQihZ012QQitemZ220071796175QQrdZ1 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22999-bre-spoiler-install/#findComment-196338 Share on other sites

January 21, 200718 yr comment_196386 Strong? you bet, it weight only 62g and hold 20Kg so with 4 of them I have 80 kg of holding power... until today hasn't moved on its own.But I could go higher with 25 kg magnets... and use 8 of them, that would be hard to pull out! January 21, 200718 yr comment_196393 I too hate the idea of drilling the sheet metal. On my daily driver I installed a rear spoiler about a year ago. I used the 3m body tape. It's 2 sides and once it's on, it's part of the car. The spoiler does great, I can feel the rear planting itself at around 70. The badge holes could be plugs with some rubber type caps. and then painted. I got the tape at a local auto paint house. January 22, 200718 yr Author comment_196484 Hi Folks,Thanks much for the suggestions.... I still haven't decided on how I'll mount the spoiler yet, But I'll either get another hatch from a pick and pull yard as Carl suggested. I also have thought about the 3M adhesive that 240ZGL mentioned.I'll probably get another hatch, since I want to fill in the seams between the spoiler, and hatch with filler. Thanks again..-Phil Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/22999-bre-spoiler-install/#findComment-196484 Share on other sites
