Question on replacing shocks

Questions...

1. Is it possible to remove the three nuts a top of the struts and the one bolt at the bottom of the strut. Bend the tab holding the brake line and then take the whole strut/spring assembly out in one unit? If so, I could take the assembly to my mechanic buddy where he will allow me to use his spring compression unit for free. There I could remove the old struts and replace them with the new ones. Afterwards I would just reconnect the three nuts on top, the one bolt on bottom and bend the tab to hold the brake line... Is there something I overlooking?

2. I bought "Monroe 73953 Sensa-Trac Strut Cartridge", are these sufficient for normal driving?

1. Yes, but it is not a simple as you make it sound. There is a spindle that connects the strut and hub assembly to the lower control arm. You have to remove the spindle and then the strut/hub assembly will come out as a unit. There are many a story about the spindle pins. You should read some of those before starting the job.

2. The Monroe should be fine for "normal" driving.

I know people are saying get a spring compressor and it's dangerous removing the springs, but it's really not. I did all 4 springs on my 240 and 280 without a spring compressor. I point the spring in a safe direction and hit the shock bolt with an impact. It doesn't go very far. It's actually a little disappointing. For people that are skeptical, here's a video of this in action.
