Found this in the attic...

Looking through an old plastic storage box I found a bunch of papers from 1981, including this consumer guide for Datsun Z cars.

I thought you guys might enjoy some of the color photos, and the "future" look at the 1984 300ZX. There was also a great article on the full story behind the 240Z. This guide is dated July, 1981.

Cheers,

Randy

That is a great find-should be some fun reading-the shots look great, and the "future" designs still look good, I wish Nissan had found an old copy of that when they were thinking about the 350, imagine the possibilities!

Agreed.

Here are my first impressions of the various sketches, or rather, what vehicles I think inspired the particular sketch. Obviously, not complete, some sketches seem a natural progression of the line, but others seem to "borrow" certain cues from other marques. Not that that isn't normal.

Hi Guys:

If you like the one in the Top Left - you'll enjoy this....

1961 Ford Styling Studio - is visited by "Japanese Designers"...

I meet **** Avrey - a pretty accomplished Designer himself, and he gave me the write-up that appeared in the Automotive News April 3, 1961.

Also check out his original design for a Jet Ski when he worked at Christ Craft) and the T-Tops he designed for the Datsun 240-Z.

**** also designed the Christ Craft Commander... today also a highly collectible treasure itself.

FWIW,

Carl B.

That comparison to the drawing on the wall is way off....

The Ford drawing has very little similarity to the Z car drawing... Give me a break... That is totally reaching for Ford Worship... The author is comming off like someone who thinks Japaneese people are "little"...

That should not be republished as fact... but as an example of small thinking on the part of many Americans post WW2... understandable for the times.. but a relic today...

I can see the relationship, recessed headlight buckets, concave hood, 3/4 windows. I don't for a second believe that the Japanese designers "copied" anything, but I think that they probably left the meeting with some "fresh" ideas in thier heads. It would be a pretty poor designer who didn't attempt to learn from others ideas. Outright copying would not be acceptable, of course, but seeing something you like, changing it to fit your needs and running with it is what design is all about.

Let's face it, the original Z cars were modeled (or inspired by,to some extent) other vehicles of the time.

Thanks for posting that link, Carl.
