2+2 VIN Numbers?

I was wondering if anybody knows why they started counting from 0 when they started making the 2+2's. Why not include them in the 260/280Z #'s?

I ask this because I have a L28 in my '71 and its VIN number is 44XXX, which doesn't compute with regular 280Z's, just the 280Z 2+2.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I quite understand your question.

Body serial numbers don't mean anything unless they are linked to a prefix that identifies the model type being counted. Seeing as the '2+2' ( '2/2' in Japan ) is a completely different body type to any of the 2-seater models, it stands to reason that they wouldn't be counted with the same body number sequence. It is the MODEL VARIANT PREFIX that is being counted.

So - in your local market case, for example - you could theoretically have had 'RLS30-000260' ( a 2-seater '260Z' model ) and 'GRLS30-000260' a 2+2 '260Z' model ) parked side-by-side in a dealer's showroom.

I ask this because I have a L28 in my '71 and its VIN number is 44XXX, which doesn't compute with regular 280Z's, just the 280Z 2+2.

You're missing the point about the full VIN number on your '71 '240Z' model. The body serial number on that particular car is part of the sequence that counts 'HLS30' bodies, and nothing else.
