Posted February 11, 200718 yr comment_198829 I have an Oil Temp guage to install on my 240Z. I have read on this forum that locating it in the Oil Pan is irrelevant, and that locating in the block gives you the working temperature reading. Exactly where in the block should I locate the sender, is their a pre-drilled and tapped hole I can just plug it into? Thanks in advance.ViparZ Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/23240-oil-temp-sender-location/ Share on other sites
February 11, 200718 yr comment_198846 I never knew that Z's had oil Temp. guage!? what I know is that there is an oil pressure sending unit.. it is on the right side of the block, just next to the engine oil filter on the right side.. He's trying to add an aftermarket guage. He's looking for a place on the block to mount it but as stated in another thread:Stock turbo oil pans have the probe in the rear. February 11, 200718 yr Author comment_198859 Yes, it is for an aftermarket gauge. In other threads, these guys think that locating the sender in the pan is worthless.NO NO NO, don't tap the sump, you don't take Oil Temp from the sump as it's the hottest place and most in-accuate. You need to take it from the block. The best place is from near the oil filter, preferably with a dry-sump setup. No, you want working temp ie the temp going to the bearings etc, that occurs after pumping & filtering. If you measure sump temp then you are measuring the splash cooling temp.Actually, all you are concerned with is the temp of the oil under pressure, in the bearing shells, etc. The temp as it lays in the sump is immaterial. So, is there a place in the block to locate it? If not, and I have to put it in the pan, can I just tap the pan, or do I need to weld in a bung? February 12, 200718 yr comment_198898 You could use a remote oil filter kit and T the temp sender into one of the lines which would put it in the pumping/filtering flow and away from the pan.
