The way to identify the block is to look on the driver side of the engine,

to the right of the motor mount. That's where they cast the block number.

#E31 = L24 (1970 240Z)

#P30 = L24 ('71-73 240Z)

#P30 = L26 ('74 260Z)

#N42 = L28 ('75-80 280Z)

#F54 = L28 ('81-83 280ZX)

Putting an L28 (280Z) motor in a 240Z and bolting on the 240Z's carbs is very popular mod.

I have a L28 in my 240Z with triple webbers. I keep the fuel-injection intake & stuff in a box in my garage.

Hey Za-ch,

The numbers listed above by Zed are actually for the head, not the block. They are accurate if the car you have is completely original.

What you need to look for is the engine number which is on the passenger side of your engine, just above the oil filter. It will start with L24, L26, L28 etc. These refer to the 2.4l, 2.6l 2.8l etc...

For Example: I've currently got an L26 block running a N42 head which has the notches in it for the fuel injectors but I've got the SU's from a 240 on it.....

Hope that helps, if not just find the numbers on your engine and we'll decypher it from there!

Cheers,

R.

Nope. The numbers I listed are in fact Block casting numbers.

Here are the head casting number:

#E31 = 1970-1971 240Z

#E88 = 1972-1974 240z-260Z (there are at least two varities of this head.)

#N42 = 1975-1976 280Z

#N47 = 1977-1983 280Z-280Zx

#P79 = 1981-1983 280ZX (Round Exhaust ports)

#P90 = 1981-1983 280ZX Turbo

#P90a = 1981-1983 280ZX Turbo (same as above, but with hydraulic lifters)

The easiest way to quicly tell if it is an L28 is to compare the rocker covers. The L24 and L26 have a more rounded rocker cover and the words nissan are much smaller. The rocker cover on an L28 is almost completely rectangle in shape with very little rounding on the edges and the words NISSAN are printed much larger and in a thick Bold Print. It looks almost identical to the RB31 86-90 Skyline 3.0L Engine. When you see it you'll know what I mean. See ya!!!!
