Fuel Door Knob Discussion

The one I have is the one on the right. The area where you grasp to open and close is shallower.

I thought that this was going to be a silly question but I suppose it has garnered some interest. Thank you all for responding. I couldn't get the information anywhere other then this site.

E4600 is translucent white injected molded styrene with a chrome mylar finsh. It sits in the N/S position latched and I associate it with probably no more than the first thousand cars made. Because it is injected plastic, it has no contouring and the shape is quite angular. E4601 and E4602 were part replacements - upgrades if you will - and are cast pot-metal with a chrome finish. They sit latched in the E/W position. Good pictures, Kats.

Thanks for help 26th but I am not sure that you are correct. I posted that question off line to some people I have met in the last few months who have some knowledge about the early cars and they tell me that they all were meant to be in the north/ south position whether they were plastic or metal.

That it had no bearing on the lines of the car and that the knob like just about all knobs when locked are in the above position for better grasping.

Please can you document here where you found that info. Because I have tried and haven't found it.

I own or owned three different '71s - 12746, 27602 & 37705. All three have the later pot metal handle, all three are East-West when latched.

Thanks for the input Arne. I'm beginning to believe the one that was on my car isn't the one it was born with. The entire car is a mix and match with a Fairlady Z, that the PO had at one time. One other thing that has me stumped, is the knob for sale on Ebay, that Kats mentioned. It is being sold by an Australian seller who refers to it as "euro". He must know something I don't, so I'll just ask him what the difference is.

Here's the answer I got from the seller of the Euro Gas Lock, part # E4602

The parts book refer to it as a Euro gas lock!!! Was mainly in Germany/Europe and when the cars were young, (am not sure about now) gas tanks in Europe could not be locked. It is a little knob which goes in the gas lock, keyless and turn to lock it.

Thanks folks. I think after more investigation that 26th is correct. The 69 cars were North/south and after that east/west.

On my 3/70 240Z the knob is east/west when in the locked position. Interesting the amount of interest and knowledge about a simple little item like a gas door knob.......now that some serious detail!!!

Hello,

Looking at the catalog,I found some interesting things.Please take a look at the first picture,this Nov 1969 LHD catalog shows the fuel filler knob sits north/south ,can you agree with me? Do not take it serious,let's just have fun.

The second picture from same catalog,key number #24 says "84360-E4600 assy-lock gas filler lid".I think we can confirm E4600 existed.

But the third picture,from a 3rd revision June 1970 LHD catalog shows the knob is slightly different,can you see the angle between the knob and metal peace tab?Can we say this knob sits east/west when its locked?

BTW,a 2nd revision March 1970 has not change anything from the Nov 1969 for this section.

Also interesting found,the 4th picture,from the next page of its section,key number #24 says "E4601...." and "E4602....".

I think there should be E4600 on the top of its description,because E4600 was born first.Started from E4601 does not make sence.E4600 should be superseded on this section.I guess this is an error of Nissan,what do you think?We always see E4602 on some auctions,in Japan too.We actually see north/south knob,this is E4600 or possibly E4601.But nobody have exprained the difference of these two part numbers.

According from this catalog,I doubt E4601 existed.RHD 240Z catalog same,it says from E4601,then E4602 on the description,there is no E4600.

Anyway,Japanese catalog says E4602 only in the one issued late 1972.The 5th and 6th picture are from Fairlady-Z catalog.

What car was this from Chris? The only early car I noticed in the convention pictures was Charlie Osborne's blue car. Was there another one there?
