ok, you're gonna have to forgive the car novice, but I've noticed a discrepency between car weights for the 77 280z, on a thread in this website someone stated the weight was 3185 lbs, where as on edmunds.com they state the 75 and up (including the 77) weighs only 2875lbs. What is the actual weight of the 77 280z, and what did they add to the car apart from the heavier bumpers to bring it up to that weight compared to the 240z?

I've never seen a '77-'78 anywhere near 3200 lbs. Most are between 2750 and 2850. The '70-'72 cars were closer to 2250. The later cars had more structure, more features, heavier engines, transmissions, rear axles, and of course, the big bumpers. All the little things add up quick like retractable seatbelts, air conditioning, wider wheels and tires, fuel injection, etc.

I have a 72 240z and the plate inside the hood is stamped 2750lbs. I have not weighed the car but it does not have AC or any of the later safety parts.

That's not curb, that's GVW. IIRC, the GVW of a Z is around 450 lbs for passengers and cargo + the curb (full of fuel, and other fluids). That would make the curb weight around 2300 for a STOCK Z. Wider wheels, larger tires, new paint over the years, and other mods will increase the weight from stock.

The "weight" listed on the sticker under the hood - is the weight to be exerted by a mass, on the end of a lever, that is swing into the front bumper - to simulate the weight of the car traveling, depending on the requirement at the time, either 2.5 mph or 5 mph. Kinetic Energy released if the car hit an immovable object at either 2.5mph or 5mph....

The Vehicle Curb Weight is printed on a sticker in the glove box... required to be there by law for 1973, but was in place before that on the 240-Z's. Along with the tire inflation pressures...

I have a '73 and I have weighed it on 3 different scales . 2420 Lbs This is with a spare tire and jack plus 1/2 a tank of gas. I don't know what is printed on the glove box door . What surprised me was the weight on the front axle is almost the same as the rear. I cannot remember the exact numbers but is is less than 100 lbs difference . Gary :rambo: There is a difference between the 4 speed and the 5 speed in weight but not much and the engines are all the same weight, Maybe the injection manifold is a pound or two more , but the block and head is the same . In fact I am running a 280 ZX engine in my Z now and one of the weigh ins mentioned above was with the L-24 now that I think about it.
