Starter question...

Hey all...

When I turn the key in the 240, I just get a click and a draw on the AMP guage.

Funny thing is, when I grab a screwdriver and jump the battery lead (on the starter) to the solinoid, it turns over with out any issues...

I have not checked to see if I have 12 volts going to the starter, is there a relay near the kick panel on the passenger side? It seems that I hear a click from a relay near there.

It just seems like in there was a solinoid issue, the screwdriver trick would not make a difference either.

Yes, there is. And it sounds like yours is bad.

As stupid as this question may be, is there a name for the relay.

Let me guess, starter relay.

Just wondering if I can find one at NAPA.

You might make sure you have good cables attached to your battery, if they are corroded you might as well replace them.

I actually made sure that things were clean when I stuffed the new battery in there...

But I will say that is one of the most overlooked things.

AFAIK there is no starter RELAY, just a SOLENOID which is ON the starter.

AFAIK the only relay that you would be hearing click on/off on the kick panel would be the ACCESSORY Relay which receives power when the Ignition Sw is in the RUN position and does not when the Ign Sw is in START.

Have you checked your Ignition Switch itself? We have seen other guys post that the switch could rotate far enough to disconnect from the RUN contact, but not far enough to make proper contact with the START, and hence had the same problem you mention.

You don't mention if you can actuate the starter via the method you described, while the key is in RUN, and have the engine start and stay running. So, I'll presume that it does. If it doesn't, then there might be other issues.

But then, I've been wrong before.

My 280Z did the same thing. It took a few times before the starter would work. ( click, click, click, then she would crank.)

after checking to make sure all my electrical connections were clean and tight (which they were) I figured the solenoid must have gone south. Sure enough I installed a new Nissan starter and that solved it.
