Side Stripes..before and after

I "Temporarily" put on the White side stripes on my Orange 240. I say "temporarily" because I had two sets and these pictures are of the car after I applied them. The pictures don't show it but there are a few wrinkles and bubbles, and I want it done it right. I just put these on to shoot a few photos and see if I like the look, or keep it plain.....I really like it.

So, in about a week a local sign shop said they would do the application for me, and it will be done right. Soooo, what do you guys think....stripes or plain...(I'm going with the stripes and maybe pana's later)

Randy, I have always liked the side stripes. They seem to "shorten" the car. Your stripes are not quite original or there may have been more than one style, I don't know. The original side stripes, as came on my car, had the 240Z cut out of the middle stripe making the lettering the color of the car. I have attached a photo of the original stripes on my 72. It is not a great photo but you get the idea. The original white stripes had a color block backing so the car color did not change the white of the stripe. I had reproduction sets made and they will be installed upon completion of the restoration.

Randy,

Well, obviously I'm biased. I say go with the stripes.

Wish I could help you with the original design stripes but the place I bought mine in Florida (http://www.graphic-express.com) no longer makes them for the Z. You can give them a call, but I called recently just to buy an extra set (just in case) and they said they don't have them anymore. I was bummed!

Go with the stripes!

Bob

Jerry is right, the center on those is not quite original. Since he has reproduced accurate sets you may want to consider getting some from him. Attached is a picture of the original dealer installed stripes on my 72. The installer also needs to center them so that the Datsun side emblem is located in the center of the wide stripe. I also like the stripes because they are very similar to those on the 1960's and the new mustangs. See attached a picture of my 2006 mustang for comparision.

Is it accurate to claim that any side stripes are more "original" than another? If I recall correctly, all those side stripes were aftermarket, not factory, add ons, and there were several brands and styles available during the 240Z years.

Or do I recall incorrectly.....:-)

Jayhawk,

I still have a set of original stripes, in the box with the datsun part number. So I do not believe that all stripes were aftermarket but most probably were. I do know that the style on my 72 were a factory accessory. Jerry Purcell

With regards to the query as to whether the stripes were original or aftermarket I am fairly sure that there is a listing of an option in the parts manual for 240Z stripes - I am not at home at the moment but I will check and post the part numbers over the weekend unless someone beats me to it.

EDIT: And if I had read Jerry's post I would have saved a duplication of thought.

They were listed as an accessory item, part number;

99990-00105

I will post a picture of an original set in the box when I get time.
