Posted March 10, 200718 yr comment_201798 So i am rebuilding my 1971 Datsun 240z and its runs great except the linkage to the su carbs sticks sometimes. I believe its because there needs to be a rubber grommet of some sort on the mechanism on the firewall that holds the linkage (like a long circular tube). ANY HELP WHERE TO GET ONE?? March 10, 200718 yr comment_201803 Normally you can find on ebay for pretty cheap, but I just did a search and could not find one. I am not sure if the lack of a firewall grommet is causing your linkage to stick. I have not looked at my linkage in a while, so I can not help, but I sure that some people on this forum can. Good luck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/23548-linkage-sticking/#findComment-201803 Share on other sites
March 10, 200718 yr comment_201819 The linkage on my '71 was sticking in two places. There is a spring under the gas pedal that was extremely worn, and the return spring on the carbs (I have dual webers, but im sure that the SUs have a similar return spring)themselves was gummed up. A little clean and lube on the carb spring, and replacing the other one fixed it up quite well. I would be very interested though if anyone knows if someone makes new linkage parts. Mine are worn badly and there is alot of play. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/23548-linkage-sticking/#findComment-201819 Share on other sites
March 10, 200718 yr comment_201828 superfunk - I would try contacting Z therapy for a lead on linkage parts, they are here in Oregon in Salem. You can talk to Steve, and I think that Bruce is still there as well...kcoke~Once you get things freed up, I would be sure to check the choke shafts that go into the bottom of the carbs, in the event that the car is runing rough, take your hand (watch the exhaust) and push up on the bottomof the choke shaft. If these push up with the choke off, then they are sticking. This is a common problem and is usually apparent with cars that have been sitting a while or just have not had the carbs freshened up.Personally, I recommend that you get the Tune-up video/dvd from Z Therapy, it is $ well spent and a great way to learn the top things you can do to a Z for best runnability and address the common ailments.Good luck!
